How did they get there? They aren't letting anyone in the Lahaina area except emergency personnel
I imagine they're letting some residents return to their properties.
A story in NYT yesterday mentioned a family that got back in to check their home safe, where tens of thousands of dollars had been left. The safe was there, along with the concrete foundation.
The guy couldn't find the key to safe so he smashed it open with rocks. Inside were only ashes. So much for a fire proof safe!
Oh my, today Friday they are bringing the cadaver dogs...pretty grime...1000 unaccounted for - could be in shelters with no service, of course. (I heard water is scarce in the shelters.)
Each day more stories....
I'm wondering if Larry Ellison is reaching out to help.
He could, almost literally.
True. There are also quite a few wealthy people who own property on Maui proper, including Jeff Bezos and Oprah. It will be instructive to see if any of them offer significant help for the "regular people" whose lives have been upended by this fire.
Viewing google maps now, I'm remembering exploring the neat old railroad in Kaanapali
This and similar fires would will have a damned hard time spreading so quickly amidst thousands of acres of nice wet sugar cane, pineapple, coffee or corn.
Yep, that's why that railroad was constructed.

Oprah was at the war memorial handing out pillows, blankets and other supplies. It is her habit to give away more money than we can imagine to charity. She’s lived part time on Maui for over 15 years. I’d bet she will also will donate financially. Other celebrities have done so as well. Btw the daily mail is a tabloid.
I haven't seen any shots of fire fighting aircraft. Are they even attempting to put it out?
Lahaina is 80% contained, they are estimating that residents can return home today (according to the news).
