Water might be cheap @ $6 but hauling 4 tons 30 miles is going to "cost" more than that.

110K to drill a well sounds crazy ... although we just got a quote for almost $10K to install a manual hand pump in our existing well, so that in the event of a sustained outage we can still pump water.

Flathead River is close and we could haul water manually, about a 2mi round trip. This assumes we're not taken out by zombies or roving gangs of cannibals in a SHTF scenario.
At the city tap which was open to anyone, 1000gal water was less than a dollar in 2000. The other five bucks the hauling fee. We pumped from the Swan river for free and hauled it twice a week.

It would cost me $6.00 to get 1,000 gal. Water weight would 8,350-ish pounds, with trailer and water tank 10,500-11,500 lbs. My 3/4 ton truck towing that weight = 7mpg back, say 10mpg empty to. 15 miles one way.

So $5 there, $7 back = $18 total. Our house would use over 1,000 gal a month (irrigate, 2-3 people) so 5x p/mo = $90 P/mo for us.

Many islands rely on rainwater collected into cisterns. A typical installation has a "roof washer" that diverts the first water run off to prevent dumping roof dirt and debris into the cistern. Others rely on debris filters. Beyond that, some put in sand filters, UV-C disinfecting lamps, and other means to further sanitize the water. However, rainwater starts out as distilled, so it won't have any heavy contaminants or minerals.

There are no islands to live on except for Flathead lake in MT, and I’m sure they can pop a well pretty easily.
