America's Best Cities for Barbecue - Articles | Travel + Leisure

so this article has particularly rankled our friends in Memphis over the last few days....I enjoy the variety in 'cue tastes around town, but think Nashville being #1 in the US is pretty ridiculous....however, I do enjoy seeing Memphians get their feathers ruffled over Nashville's growing national image...have been noticing lots of jealousy coming from the western edge of the state lately

But in all seriousness...Nashville has some great BBQ, but is not in the discussion for top BBQ city.

We don't have a unique style...which on one hand, isn't good...but on the other, it allows us to have a lot more BBQ diversity than cities with a particular style (like Memphis). I take little stock in T+L lists anyways (kinda like Forbes)...the press is nice, but sometimes it feels like it's just given, not earned.

Having lived in both places for a quarter century each, I have no interest in city-to-city rivalries.

But I agree with nashvols that praising Nashville for its variety is sort of a cop-out. You know how these rankings work, though. The old "best BBQ" question has had the same few answers for decades now. They needed to get a spike in publicity.

Concurred. We have great BBQ. But not a great BBQ heritage. I think that counts far more than diversity of BBQ, personally.

At first I was a little offended by the tone of the article towards Memphis, but when I got to the references to Nashville in May, the Mighty Cumberland, and the PS section, I realized the writer was poking fun of T+L, not Memphis. Although he probably could have left out a couple of the jabs about Memphis being slow.

Nashville has gotten better in the availability of good BBQ, but it is still nowhere as good as Memphis.

If the article wasn't overly exaggerrated, the point would've been missed. Sadly, some still missed it.

My favorite line is the PS:

Being from Texas, I like to think I know a little bit about BBQ - maybe that's al just in my mind though. I've only tried a few places here so far so I am certainly reserving judgement until I have a larger data set to work with. With that said, for the most part, I've been mildly disappointed... until today...

This post is actually fairly timely because I just had probably one of the best brisket sandwiches I've ever had in my life and it was from a food truck of all places. If you ever find yourself with an opportunity, and you like good brisket, I hgihly recommend hitting up the Delta Bound food truck and sampling their Smokehouse Sandwich. Sweet baby Jesus, it's good!
