Visual Acuity: at least 20/40 for each eye and both eyes together, with or without corrective lenses.
Field of Vision: at least 70 degrees in the horizontal median in each eye.
Color Vision: demonstrated ability to distinguish colors that pertain to driving and traffic control.
These requirements are for the truckers as well and refer to distance vision. If they can't pass the test, they don't get their CDL card until they get glasses for correction and this restriction is noted on the card/license. Stopped wothout glasses - not good.... These requirements are the same wherever you go, no less and possibly stricter. Frankly, I'd worry more about the actual driving part.

According to the DMV, getting stopped without your glasses or contacts is the same as operating a motor vehicle without a license. I'm not sure what the penalty is for driving without a valid license, but you'll need a ride home for sure.
THANKS EVERYBODY!!!! They said the same thing that y'all did!!! (Whew!)
I just got my NC drivers license this morning after being here a year and one day. I have reading glasses and it wasn’t a problem. I just looked through the thing for the vision test and read the top line and verified the road signs and passed without the reading glasses.
FYI the test asks questions like, “what is the punishment if you aid and abet an under age person to obtain alcoholâ€. What’s that have to do with driving? FYI, It’s one year DL revocation if convicted.
Also speed limit outside of the cities and towns is 55 mph.
There was also one about what you need to do to determine if there is a soft shoulder and there wasn’t an answer that made since. I think the correct answer was look in the mirror or something.
Another thing the yellow and black sign that is a triangle pointing to the right is NO PASSING ZONE.
The test wasn’t particularly hard, but I would at least read through the book before taking it.

I didn't know that. I've only been asked twice (at the same Highway Patrol checkpoint) if I was wearing contact lenses since I have the corrective lenses restriction on my license. With that type of penalty you'd think they would ask more often when they see me not wearing glasses.

Yep... I don't know what it is about wearing the darn glasses and/or having the restriction on the license. Aging? Sheesh!
No, no, it's not that and you're NOT sounding mean. He needs glasses for READING and that's why he's worried he will fail. We're heading out of town for a couple weeks and he's wondering if he can drive there and take the test there. Otherwise, I end up driving. Which is really no big thing. I'm a good driver, but I get sleepy.
Thanks for responding.
They are testing mainly for far vision. If he wears reading glasses, he will probably be able to pass the eye test. Now I am slightly nearsighted and for 10 years I was restricted to glasses while driving. The last time I went to get my license, I passed without the glasses and I wear reading glasses, 200 strength to be exact. They handed me the license to make sure all the information was correct and I had to put on my reading glasses to read it but I had just passed the driving eye test. Go figure. He should be fine if that is all that is wrong with his vision.
The machine NC DMV uses tests distance vision, and sign recognition, not near vision. I wear reading glasses and have no problem with the DMV vision test.
If he cannot pass the vision test, then he absolutely has no business behind the wheel of any vehicle, in any state in the union.
