Thanks for the up-date and the clarification. I don't think it's the State's intention to really stick-it-to-anybody, but it had been so long ago that the tag renewal slipped-up on me like poor linzinator331. Didn't your daughter have pay cost-of-court, or was that dropped because the Judge dismissed it?

It IS an entirely different story if you fail to get a NC Inspection sticker by the date the State gives you in the warning letter, or if you let your INS lapse.

Nope, no court costs, just showed the the ticket and current registration and it was dismissed.

But you are Oh! so correct on the inspection sticker or insurance. Even changing insurance companies can cause you headaches, as the company you drop reports that to the state, then in a couple of month you get a post card from the state demanding you turn in your tags at the nearest DMV office immediately.

Makes you wonder how dead-beats get away with no INS, doesn't it? or expired tags, and inspection stickers? I like to think it catches up to them sometime, somehow.

Thanks for the clarification Asheville. I'm relieved to hear that, at least it's one less headache. I haven't made it to the tag office yet, I've just not been using my car.

It's also good to know about the inspection - mine expires sometime in May, per my sticker, so I know I HAVE to get that done because they know! I'm not looking forward to that since I have a crack in my windshield...

I got a ticket for late mv registration on my car. When I registered it they charged me a late penalty and had me sign a statment that said I am aware I can't be charged another penalty after that date. This has happened twice to me and the tickets have been dismissed. But now I have a ticket out of county and they won't dismiss it by phone. I will go to court but would like to know what the law is in case I need to cite it. Is it double jeopardy?

When you got the first ticket, did you then register your car, or just continue to drive?

It sounds like you have been ticketed 4 times for this. Has registering your car ever been a consideration. How much time elapsed between these tickets?

Default BS in NC

I was ticketed by NC SHP for expired registration. When I went and renewed my registration then took the new registration card to clerk of court and they dismissed it. However, when a job did a criminal background check it came up as a misdemeanor. Yes! It is a misdemeanor offense in NC. The funny thing is that expired inspection sticker is just an infraction. Ponder that.

NC now only has one sticker, the one that goes on your license plate. You can't get a new sticker unless you've had an inspection in the 90 days prior to registration renewal.

They (DMV) will want a prorated amount for the lapsed registration plus about six dollars for every fifteen day period.
But FyI if you fill out an affidavit of no use (they provide the form) you will not have to pay any registration fees for the no use period. This form is on the HONOR SYSTEM.
I met a guy who knew a guy who filled out one of these forms to cover an eleven month gap.
This is their penalty. Administrative not citative. They are not POLICE officers.

I was recently doing some repair work to one of my cars and the tag expired in November. The car was not drivable until the first week in December, at which point I got it inspected the same day. Went online and paid taxes/registration, but got hit with a $15 late fee.
