I was recently doing some repair work to one of my cars and the tag expired in November. The car was not drivable until the first week in December, at which point I got it inspected the same day. Went online and paid taxes/registration, but got hit with a $15 late fee.
Yes, registration must be done by the last day of the month the expiration is due or on the first day of the following month, the late fee is $15; If two months its $20 and greater than 2 months, its $25 dollars.

If you have an NC registration you'll see that it actually expires on the 15th day of the month following the month on your sticker (a sticker with 11/16 expiration actually expires on 12/15/16).

Due to new laws regarding this, you have 15 day grace period for a cop to not give a ticket, however, the DMV will add the $20 dollar fine for new stickers (registration) after 1st of the month after due month.
Speaking from experience of supporting our DMV by paying these annoying fees for the last two years.
My tag is always due same month I normally take a vacation so for me waiting til after 1st of the month was always more plausible.
This (upcoming) year, once the DMV mails that renewal my goal is to get it out of the way to avoid the fees.
I am going through a divorce. I am letting my wife drive a car that is registered in my name until the divorce is final. The plates/registration is due 4/30/17. If she does not get is inspected and registered, can I get in trouble?

She will be cited driving a vehicle with expired registration if she is pulled over over after May 15th (She can operate without citation.
However on May 1st a $15 dollar late fee will be added, two months or greater a $25 dollar late fee.
This is a new law that went into effect July 1st, 2016. Much different rules the time this thread was created.
Its your choice on who you let drive but since your the owner of vehicle and hope she insured user on this car as both need to be done to keep the vehicle from being impounded or wrecked.
Makes you wonder how dead-beats get away with no INS, doesn't it? or expired tags, and inspection stickers? I like to think it catches up to them sometime, somehow.
Who cares? It's all a money racket for the state, and nothing more.
You have to get the inspection done before you can renew your registration. In order to do that if you don't have a current registration, you will probably need to go get a 10 day temp tag ($15) so you can get the inspection done. It is a bit of a catch-22 these days (personal experience recently with trying to get an RV ready to sell, one that had not been registered for a couple of years). I would not drive the offending vehicle at all until I had that temp tag in hand if I were you.
Thanks. I've been worried about getting stopped ever since I realized I forgot to renew it. I thought I read somewhere that they might slap some fines on at the tag office, but I suppose that's only for an expired inspection?
You could taxi to the office to renew, or get a friend to take you. There is no need to drive the car with expired tags.
I know I'm not allowed to drive the car, and if I get pulled over I'll get a fine. My question was about when I go to renew it though... if they will fine me at the tag office.
No. No fine, but there may be a late charge of a few percent.
