I see people driving around all the time in NC with 'fake', handwritten tags in their back windows that amount to nothing more than shabby scraps of paper and old cardboard boxes. I'm pretty sure most of these cars are completely illegal, stolen or otherwise illegitimate, but it doesn't seem to stop people from driving them. Personally, I'm shocked and appalled that these people are pulled over more for it. I guess the cops are too busy camping on the highways.

True. A lost tag can be replaced for $10 at any tag office.

That was one of the first things I noticed upon moving to NC. Gotta love the piece of cardboard that says "Lost Tag." My out of state friends never miss seeing one on their way into NC to visit.
The sad thing is...I don't even notice any more. I'm so used to it.

You MUST register a car to drive it legally in NC. Penalty would be at least $121 court cost plus $25 fine.

I am in the say position, but I brought a brand new car and the paper work for the tag never came home to me saying I can go get my tag. My tag expired and then I was still driving it. Then I took my car to the dealer and they gave me a blank dealer tag and told me go to the tag office and get it. On my way there I was stopped by the police and they gave me a tiicket for driving with a blank tag. How can i beat this case or is there any advice I can be given?

If the car is not registered to you right now I assume it is still registered to your Dad. If he is maintaining the insurance he doesn't have to turn in the tag so why not just leave it on the car because it is still his car anyway legally. If he doesn't want to do it that way for a short time you best just keep it parked until you can be the legal owner....

Further, and this was a surprise to me when I moved here, if you buy a car from a private individual you can put a plate on that from one of your other insured vehicles so you can drive it home without hassle.
This saves a lot of fuss of having to return after registering and insuring the car to bring it home.

Wow people are really mean! You ask a question and they give you all this unwanted advice. In Alabama you have a few days as long as the car is insured.
