Just Bought Car - Can I drive it with no tag?

Everything is legal until you get caught. I have a neighbor who has been driving all over the area with expired tags (march 2018). when he sees a cop he pulls into the nearest lot or driveway. I once drove with expired tags for 6 months. I actually forgot all about it. Luckily I was never red lighted.

I am sure this is resolved by now but we had a similar problem this summer. I bought a car from my cousin. We had the money to register it but neither one of us had ever done a transaction without either going though the bank or dealing directly with a dealer. We had no idea what we were doing. I gave her a check and she handed me the keys. She lives 3 hours south of me, so we just met in the middle. On a Saturday. No bank.

Anyway, between the title not coming in on time and her not notarizing it, we had to wait WEEKS to get it registered. And we were told we could not drive it without a tag. We did a little bit, since it isn't good t leave a car just sitting without any driving at all, but it was severely limited. Thankfully, it wasn't a primary car.

I saw a car a few days ago with Wyoming plates. The tag expired 1/18 but the driver used a black marker and wrote a 1 after the 1 to look like 11.
