I just bought a car from my Dad this weekend. It has no tag, but his insurance is still in effect. I'll add it to my insurance whenever his is about to expire. So the car will always be insured.

But we don't have the $110 to get the car registered till a week or two (about $40 Highway usage fee, $33 tag, $40 title).

Is there anything I can do so I can drive it until I can get it registered?

(Aside from faking a tag, or anything else illegal.)

Don't know if NC does "temporary registrations" - but also you have to have the insurance in your name I believe when you register it. Maybe your dad can let you use his tags.

Dealer can issue paper plate but only when registration is in process.

DMV has single trip tag to get inspection.

Otherwise, you must register it.

Please don't take this with offense, but I would not feel comfortable driving a car - anywhere - if I didn't even have a $110 to my name.

I guess whatever you feel comfortable with, as long as you're legal and insured.

I just wouldn't want to be stuck miles from home, have a breakdown or run out of gas without being able to come up with the cash to get home. If he can't pay for the tags, I doubt he's paying for towing insurance like AAA or something similar.

Park it till you register it, plain and simple. If not, you're just asking for the cops to pull you over. The first thing they ask for is license and registration. I don't know what penalty exists for this infraction, but it's totally not worth it. Why jeopardize yourself for lack of patience?

I never said I wanted to drive around and risk a ticket. I was just wondering if there was a legal way to use the car during the interim. Something like a temporary tag, or some other solution of which I was unaware.

You can only get a temporary tag once you go to the tag agency and start the registration process and you're waiting on the regular license plate to arrive.
