Visit in January when the temp is minus 40 and the wind blows at 70mph. You can literally stop at a gas station after a 2 hour drive, go inside and buy somestuff, come out and there is ice frozen to the inside of your windows or your tires are frozen to the concrete.

I lived in ND for 37 years and never experienced either one of these circumstances! Nor did I ever experience 70 mph winds when it was -40. It rarely gets to -40 anymore. Years ago it did, but I don't recall hearing about it from my family who still live there for at least 10 or 15 years.

I live in Wisconsin so I'm not scared of the cold. There have literally been times when I've run to and from my car since it was so cold out! (I've seen many other people here do it too!) So if it does get that cold in ND, I think I can handle it.

Lucky you. Last year wasent bad nor the year before but 3 years ago it most defiantly was.
My point was that most people visit places like this in the summer when it is nice and run screaming back home when winter hits.

Yea, good point. If they're used to a warmer climate I guess they probably would. I wouldn't blame them, though! LOL

We have a couple of meteorologists from southeastern Wisconsin up here in Grand Forks. The winters are longer....with less "warm" periods than say Milwaukee. Thus our snowcover lasts a lot longer. But also we are sunnier and overall a bit less stormy than Milwaukee or Madison areas. -40F is very rare..... In 2004 we had our record low of-44F in Grand Forks. But to get that cold it is clear and calm. Days with low wind chills -40 to -50F occur but only a few times a winter.

I am a cold weather fan....so in my mind people overstate our cold weather. It isnt that bad except for only a few days a winter when schools may close. Cold weather is what remote starters are for. You can leave your car running while in/out a quick shopping trip to the store or gas station and your car is still warm.

FYI In the Grand Forks area the best small town near our city is Thompson. Just a few miles down I-29. I live in East Grand Forks across the river in Minnesota and we like it here with the bit smaller school district.

Could just move to Northwood. It should be free of tornados for a while
