Lots of out of the way places near you that are beautiful, easy to get to, and virtually empty, since their very existence is outside of the realm of the screen obsessed culture that we have become.
Two years late, but I heartily endorse the Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer series. I used the New York edition to plan a bicycle trip to Montreal back in the 90's. The detail on these things is phenomenal.

As far as changes over the last 2 years I haven't noticed a lot. I suppose some new people have moved out from the city but it's not as crazy as it was in the mid-2000's. You don't see as much building, at least not in my part of Monroe County. Although they have finally started building that Smithfield Gateway shopping center on Route 209 just off exit 309.

I'm aware of the issues in the southern areas. A long time ago I went with a friend of mine was looking at houses not long after the 2008 crash, and I saw the ghettoization (and this friend recently bought another house in Stroudsburg, so he's a glutton for punishment.)

But the basis of this thread is the NORTHERN part of the region (Honesdale and environs.) I had heard that north of 84 was significantly better than south of 84. Is that still true? Or has that succumbed to the ghettoization that overtook the southern part?

I have a house near hawley and honesdale. The area is very rural still and not a mess. We just bought in 2020 and are not regretting it at all.

Some areas are growing in leaps and bounds, while other areas of our County are stagnating. Route 940, west of Route 611, is growing rapidly. Many new businesses are under construction or planning to construct on the section of the road between Route 611 and Route 380.

On the other hand construction materials are going up again. According to this link (https://www.thebalance.com/lumber-pr...crease-5216723) the average cost of a single-family home is up to $404,700. I know that our wages have gone up, but with prices like that average home cost, we are farther behind than we ever were. With the rising cost of fuel, my feeling is that we will have fewer commuters from our large metropolitan areas. We might even have fewer vacationers with many choosing to go to local entertainment spots instead of traveling?

I guess we have to wait and see how all this works out. It will be a costly year for many.

Do you live there full time, or is it a summer/vacation house?
