Oh, I disagree. The 55 may run through the whole county, but it doesn't divide it into what is popularly thought of as north and south. A 55 dividing line would put Tustin and Anaheim Hills and parts of Orange and Costa Mesa in south county, which they definitely are not, plus Irvine and Newport Beach, etc. which many people including me don't think of as south county.

The 133 to 241 toll road up to the 91 would be a much better dividing line.

Anyway, most people who live here don't say "the OC." Are you a native?

San Juan Capistrano, where all the school kids took field trips to the mission, was South County. Mission Viejo existed; my husband grew up there. But the Irvine area was just what you had to drive through to get from North to South County and vice versa. So really it was kind of a no man's land and it's no wonder there is some dispute about where it belongs now.
That was basically the reason it was looked at as the dividing line before it was turned into a community. You drove through it from North to South. Now is it North or south or still kinda viewed as in the middle? I would say in the middle.

I could get on board with saying there is a Central OC that includes Irvine, Tustin, Newport Beach, and Costa Mesa.

Yes, central is a good term, though it would include as you note a few more cities than just Irvine.

If you include Newport Beach, maybe West Central.

Where are some areas that have a walkable downtown?
Irvine and Tustin are both good cities. Tustin has a nice old town "downtown" as well.
Some parts of Irvine (North Park) go to Beckman High (Tustin USD) and its a very good high school.

All Irvine High Schools are good too. Portola, Northwood and Uni High might be "more" competitive.
