Gun shots can sometimes be heard from people practicing beyond the 'city' limits. I think it makes neighbors feel secure. Theft usually by tweekers is a real problem.

I am an RN and also a member of the Sixes Volunteer Fire Dept. So far I have not been to any motor vehicle accidents but I just joined recently. My opinion of medical on the south coast is not that great but oh well....

Coquille is a wonderful little river town. The drive up HW42 South from 101 from Bandon is like driving into paradise.

I've never been much of a fan of Coos Bay, dating back from when I did some work there in the late 90s and early 00s. It's better than it was then, but, IMO, not by a lot.

Although I prefer the south coast to camp, if I was actually going to move to the coast (and I wouldn't because it is just too wet and cool for me), I'd probably pick Florence just because it is a more direct shot into Eugene for anything major.

I live in Florence part time and again, the gunshot noises from the gun club aren't audible all over town. I've made a point to listen for them since the discussion came up, including on a day when they were having an event out there, and I've never heard them at all.

Florence is a nice little town, but there are a lot of retirees. It's a good central location on the coast, though -- easy enough drive to Eugene and to other coastal communities. There was a series of articles in the local paper, though, about the difficulties involved in finding rental housing.

Mermaid, you need to spend a few weeks out here. Fly into Portland, that’s the cheapest. Then head out 26 to the coast, about a 90 minute drive. Start in Cannon Beach and head south; take a beautiful scenic drive along highway 101 and check out all your possible towns. Each town on the coast has its own vibe. Some are more beach oriented with easy beach access, some are situated on a bay or river or have an actual industry in addition to tourism.

What all the towns have in common is the isolation caused by the Coast Range. As previous posters pointed out, Florence is the most accessible. Portland isn’t THAT far from Cannon Beach and Astoria. The southern coast is the most isolated.

Safety, high speed internet, veterinary services and adequate health care all exist on the coast. You really just have to come and see which areas you are drawn to!

Do you have a summer home for your visits or do you rent/ air B&B or the likes when you stay there during those months? I may have to consider a part time arrangement of sorts until I can figure out where exactly I want to settle down (that idea just now occurred to me...hmmm). Any words of advice?

To the best of my knowledge there is EMT service everywhere on the Coast. At least I can't think of any areas that would be without it.

Default To Mermaid26 Did you make the move?

Hi Mermaid26,
I see this thread is about 3 years old, and a lot has happened in that time! I'm wondering if you ever moved to the Oregon coast...or even did an exploratory trip. I'd really like to hear your impressions of the various towns and amenities. I hope you're still on Citydata and see this!

It's not likely she will respond. Looking at her profile, she hasn't been on city\data for almost a year.
