So, somebody in my facebook friends put "having contractions" as her facebook status. You start going into labor and the first thing that comes to mind is to put it on facebook? Or does it not become "labor" until after your water breaks?
That is what I did this past summer. Mine started at 8pm & were incredibly mild until about 4am. Couldn't sleep & had several FB friends who were also preggers. It was fun & kept me occupied at 2am. I did some cooking, took a shower, read, watched tv, scanned the internet. Until the very end, it was the easiest & somewhat boring labor. One of my best friends was only a couple days behind me w/ her due date & couldn't sleep that night, so we "chatted" a lot.
I've seen statuses telling stage of labor, time going in for csec, how far about contractions are, etc. The second you start a contraction doesn't mean you need to run to the ER & push. There is a lot of spare time for most.
I never made it to that point, but people can have contractions for a long time. They warn you against coming to the hospital too early. Killing time on Facebook seems as good or as bad as anything else, plus it gives a heads up to waiting friends and family that the baby will be arriving sooner rather than later. Labor can be a long process.
OP, I don't want to put words in your mouth; however, the gist to me of what you are saying is that:
a) here you are about to go into labor and you have no other priorities than to post that on facebook?
b) what does it say about our culture and society that the most personal and intimate details of our lives are now posted on the internet as they occur?
But, my facebook loathing may be projecting item b.

Maybe they have been in labor for hours and needed some distraction....
I wouldn't do it because I don't post personal information on facebook, but I've seen it done. I figure someone else's facebook page is her business. If I don't like what she's posting, I always have the option to hide or delete.
It wouldn't bother me. Labor contractions can last for hours, even days. I'm sure the person was doing lots of things to kill time and maybe was just excited to share the news that the baby would be coming soon.

I agree here.
Although I think its odd, its possible that the person who "shared" that is both excited, and using FB as a way to communicate with friends/family that she is starting contractions.
I think it would of been weird if someone posted "I'm about to push" from their Blackberry while they have their legs up in stirrups. "Having Contractions" no more weird than someone posting something such as "getting my tonsils out tomorrow". I had a friend post "I had an eptopic pregnancy and it burst" which I think was a little TMI considering she is about 20 and not trying in any shape or form to have a kid also not in a relationship.
