My friend rarely gets to see his teenage son, even though he has joint custody, because the kid prefers to be at his other dad's house where there is a basketball hoop.
Yeah, OP, I don't think basketball is becoming LESS popular with kids, if that was your theory.
ugh, and the thought of living anywhere near a basketball hoop would absolutley make me not buy a house near one.
the thought of hearing a ball bouncing is terribly annoying.

You can't hear the ball bouncing if you live just down the street.
We have one in the driveway. My 10-year old boys and I like to play. Really itching for Spring so we can get back out there.
Looking around the neighborhood, there's a few other houses with similar age kids and they have hoops. I see them being used as well.

We have a rule of no playing BBall before 10AM, but to be honest I can barely hear the ball bouncing from inside my own house to the driveway. I never hear the ball bouncing at the house 2 doors up when kids play there, only when i go outside.
I had one growing up and so did most of my friends. Now that I have 3 kids of my own we definitly have a hoop. They all play organized basketball so we had to have one. Lots of my kids friends have one as well. Our hoop doesnt get a ton of use now because the town renovated a park 1 min down the street and put in a beautiful new court that my kids use a ton now. Any given time when the weather is nice on the weekend or evenings there are kids on the court. Which is great to see it getting alot of use.
On our block, there are none on garages but four neighbors have portable hoops that get a lot of use by the kids in on the block. Great thing about them is that they can be set up in opposite driveways to create a small court (it's not a busy street). Those are popular in our neighborhood, along with permanent driveway poles/hoops and more than a few backyard courts. In the winter, the hockey rinks begin appearing in backyards (many with boards, more than a few with outdoor lighting). Lots of portable soccer nets in yards, too, getting a lot of use.
