PJC Introduces New Theatre Director

Rodney Whatley is the new theatre director at Pensacola
Junior College. He teaches acting, directing, dramatic literature and theatre and directs several Mainstage productions per year as well as advises students.

Most recently he was an adjunct instructor at PJC, Jefferson Davis Community College and the University of West Florida. He also taught at Florida State University and Maclay School in Tallahassee.

Professional directorial experience includes productions of “Waterbabies,” “Poof!” “Happy Talkin’,” “Glass Menagerie,” “Noises Off,” “The Patient,” “The Other Son,” “The Perfect Bigot,” “Mame!” “An Enemy of the People,” “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Nerd.”

Community theatre involvement includes Pensacola Little Theatre and Evenings in Old Seville.

Whatley received his bachelor’s degree in theatre at the University of Montevallo, Montevallo, Ala., and his master’s degree in theatre at Linwood University, St. Charles, Mo. He is working on his doctorate at Florida State University.

Pensacola also has the Gulf Coast Arts Festival.
An artist I met in Denver says it's one of the best.
While I agree that the northwest coast in general might not be as diverse as more urban areas, I do not think it is totally lacking in enlightened, creative folks. Even little Port St Joe had an arts festival, if no theater.
Also, I am now living on the Atlantic side of Florida and it feels more humid here than it did on the Gulf, but we are no longer right on the beach so who knows.

Bear in mind that the winters are chilly here in the panhandle.

The Seafood Festival in Applachiacola always the first weekend in November is just wonderful!

We liked Pensacola when we went there from SW Fla. Beautiful beaches in Navarre!

We decided to stick a little closer to where we are now ( about 60 miles from here) as we found a place we like more. But Navarre/Pensacola was on the list.

You must stop and eat at Atlas Oyster House! Try the oyster sampler and also the sushi appetizer. One night we went and just ate appetizers. Terrific!

There's also one of the best fish markets in the USA not too far from there in Pensacola.

Here's the real Pensacola:
Beautiful beaches, but only one has anything to do. Others are sand and water and nothing else....unless you count the condos. If you like fishing, boating, and laying on the beach, this is your place. Houses are affordable but you'll be lucky if you can find anyone to insure it, and if you can, it will be expensive. Taxes aren't bad compared to the rest of the country, but the city services reflect that. Bus system is about to go out of business and libraries are on the verge of closing, most public schools are pathetic and most of the town is dirty and disgusting. Lots of old run down neighborhoods and a lot of poverty here. Escambia county is one of the poorest in Florida. There isn't much to do here. Malls are pathetic- anchor stores are Sears, JC Penney and Dillards. A few yearly festivals that are nice, one downtown night spot and a few good restaurants and very active and very good little theatre groups. The sewage treatment plant is in the middle of downtown and they've been talking about moving it for 20 years, but it's still there. Oh, and don't forget the paper mills that have poisoned several of the local Bayous and the air quality that is some of the poorest in the country from the toxic emissions from mills and dumps. (don't take my word for it...look it up!) Downtown has a few interesting shops, but they've cleverly put in parking meters on the main shopping areas so you can only stay 2 hours. And downtown is completely closed down on Saturday and Sunday! You can tell the feel of a town by it's news. They recently had the closing of the local Krispy Kreme donut shop on the front page 4 times! And you should have seen the hoopla when it re-opened! Here's what I've heard from people who live here, visit here and tourists: Nice beaches. Boring. Filthy. Pretty much in that order.
