Although I was not raised here in the valley, I was born in eastern Arizona and used to spend time in the valley every summer. My aunt lived in Chandler when it was just a small Mayberry type commuity where everyone knew each other, you could leave your doors open. It was great. I remember "Kurt The Clown", being a member of the Wallace Watchers Club and watching each day to see if you were one of the lucky ones chosen to be on the show and choosing a toy from their toy shelf. The Toy Cottage, Jack Adams Alligator Farm.
I remember there was alot of land between Apache Jct, Mesa and Tempe that is all now settled. I remember spending time at Legend City, what a great place to go to.
Thanks to everyone for sharing their memories of the valley, it was a real pleasure going through and reading them and thinking back to some wonderful times.

Yes, Tang's Cathay and Tang's Imports and West Plaza. How could I forget?

I may have the terminal numbers wrong but I know I had to walk down rolled up stairs then across the tarmac in the heat more than once flying between Portland OR and Phoenix in the 1970's. I believe the airline was Western?

I never got a Ladmo bag

Had no idea there was an alligator farm! I remember the big swamp full of them at the zoo though.

Wow, I love it people talking about the great city of Phoenix, when it was a great city. I grew up in the heart of it all on 7th st and Roosevelt area before they built the I-10. I remember The AJ Bayless on 7th st and McDowell, I loved the Wax Museum across the street from Legend City and watching Chili Davis Play for the Phoenix Giants, or going to a concert at Compton Terrace next to Legend City. ( SRP really took over that spot I think they should give back to the city and build another theme park and outside concert stadium there's plenty of land around town )The fair ground was host to the Circus, The Phoenix Suns, Ice Capades, concerts and was known as "The Mad House On McDowell" . I remember Thomas Mall, Park Central Mall, Tower Plaza, Los Arcos Mall, Westdale, Maryvile Mall, Westridge Mall,Chris-Town mall,Tri City Mall and Valley West Mall. It was fun walking 9 blocks to Central and Roosevelt and watching the City Parades, Chanel 3 was on 16th street and Osborn, The Library was on McDowell, I was a Teen and we Had Tommy's Night Club on 7th ave. and Camelback back in 85-87, Cashion, and Tolleson was a day trip on the bus, Encanto Park had the coolest boat rides and had the concert under the stars, and had shuffle board and archery. You use to be able to drive through the Phoenix Country club on 12 st and Thomas, we had diving boards at the public pools, The Phoenix Civic Plaza held the coolest Carshows and concerts,The greyhound bus station was on the corner of 5th street and washington, I remember all my fiend's houses slowly being tore down where the I-10 freeway is now from 20th st. to 7th Ave ( that was a nieghborhood back then ) There was a U Toetum on 7th st where you get on going eastbound on 7th street ( Moreland ) what abut the Kon Tiki Hotel on 24th st and Van buren here's a picture Kon Tiki Hotel Phoenix, AZ Postcard on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/neatocoolville/104903974/ - broken link) there use to be the Prime Rib on 9st and Van buren, The old Phoenix Union High School Football Stadium on Polk and 7th street It used to take me 10 minutes to climb to the top and I could see as far as the whole in the Rock near the zoo from on top and as far as the Westdale Sign on 35th ave. I remember, Yellow Front stores one was on 19th ave and Camelback, and my mom would get her meds from SuperX drug store on 20th Street and McDowell Back then we could drive down Roosevelt to 20th street up to McDowell. I also remember sneaking into the Rodeo drive inn, and I noticed no one mentioned The River Side Ballroom on Central near walkins street. We need another Riverside ballroom wow. I also remeber Green Gables does anyone remember Brookshires on 16th street and Mcdowell ? I remember going camping in Payson we'd take Main street out of Mesa then up the Bee Line and it was like a roller coaster up and down up and down the road was crazy. As for the westside of Phoenix, there was nothing but cotton fields. And every Friday and saturday night we'd go to Manzanita speedway on 35th Ave for the mini stock car races, and we would go to south Mountian for a horseback ride and eat dinner at the western cowboy restrants there , the Silver Pony was the hottest western bar and had real cowboys I could go on for days. If anyone wants to share stories with me please contact me thanks.

What is spooky is that I have only been in the Phx area since 1990 and several of those locations (and business names) are familiar to me!

I lived near 12th St/Indian School 1997-99 so, yes I clearly remember KTVK TV3, Brookshires (which is a Mexican food place now) along with what was ABCO (the old Bayless?) @ 7th St/McDowell (now a Safeway).

Hell; my fave parts of the Phx area are from Thomas (south) to Bethany Home (North) with 15th Ave (West) and 44th St (East) rounding things out

Wow... nostalgic is right! Hearing the Wallace and Ladmo theme song again after 20+ years takes me right back to my childhood. What memories watching that show daily! Michael, thanks for the link!

Another couple of things-recognizable-only-to-oldtime-Phoenicians popped into my head today. And now I can't make them stop. So I will uncharitably share them with all of you:

We're working
We're holding the prices down
We're keeping the service up!
We're Brown and Brown!
We're Mesa
We're Mesa born and raised
Come on up to Brown and Brown Chevrolet!
Come on up to the Mesa Chevy
Come on up today!
Come on up to Brown and Brown Chevrolet-hey-hey!

(please make it stop)

Does anyone else remember the hepatitis song?

Wash your hands after going to the bathroom
Wash your hands after changing baby too
'Cause we don't want to catch hepatitis
And we don't want hepatitis to catch you. Who? YOU!

WOW...I had completely forgotten about the Wax Museum! Someday I'll have to dig through an old steamer trunk that has some stuff from the sixties and before. I think I still have something I bought there. Brookshires-I went there for the first time in 1968 when I went for a ride-along with an older brother who worked for Phoenix PD. On those trips to Payson, do you remember Beeline Dragway? My brother took me there often when he was racing his '58 Merc or his '66 Chevy. My Dad took me camping up above Payson also. I was lucky enough to get to work the old Beeline Hwy occasionally in the eighties and early nineties. Even ran a few miles up Slate Creek Hill for the Special Olympics Torch Run (I was much younger then). I also remember Super-X but the closest drug store to us in Scottsdale was a Skaggs just east of the future Los Arcos Mall. Thanks for the memories, Rick Ch.!

BTW lostinpgh, I do remember that Brown and Brown jingle. If it gets stuck in my head I'm gonna hunt you down!
