Practically everything here is Arizona this, Arizona that. All of our major sports teams except the Suns have the Arizona name. It's all related to the topic of this thread. Phoenix has an issue with identity for some odd reason. Not really a crisis, but it is a problem.
Part of the problem is, Phoenix doesn't have much pride compared to places like Dallas or even Houston. It's either overshadowed by LA, Denver, Vegas, or it doesn't self promote itself cause it prefers to be a bloated mediocre suburb with San Diego skyline. Their NFL teams are named after the state, not the city. Why did they change the name to Arizona Cardinals from Phoenix Cardinals? Even State Farm stadium itself isn't in Phoenix, maybe just change the name to Glendale Cardinals, lol.

I've seen better constructed takes in the "letters to the editor" section.

Arizona is the Grand Canyon State, hence the NFL using the Grand Canyon in promotional material is fine. The NFL content staff also probably has no idea about the many great spots in the PHX metro itself that they could have used instead of the Grand Canyon, such as Papago Park or the Superstition Mountains. Has absolutely zero to do with an identity crisis.
I agree. This is much ado about nothing.

That is true. Phoenix wants the LA glamour but not the LA prices or problems. They even had a fake beach in Tempe lol, trying to be more of a beach city then embrace its desert location how Tucson does. Whenever someone new to Phx would arrive they would always mention how cool it is to live 5 hours from LA or San Diego and 4 from Vegas but never focused on Phoenix lol. I live in LA and most people here just wish they lived closer to the beach but never brag about how close we are to San Diego or Santa Barbara. LA is LA and we try to enjoy our city despite the big issues we face here.

Phoenix does have an identity problem but I dont think it truly matters. Phoenix is Phx and needs to stop trying to replicate other cities and just embrace its desert metropolis status.

Yep, so Boston must have no pride since their team is called New England Patriots.

By fake beach, you mean the town lake located in the Salt River bed? Literally, they created a damn to put water back in the river which is behind a dam upstream. Nobody swims there, they do SUPs, kayaks, and small paddle boats. It's just a small town lake like the one in Austin, that has led literally billions of urban development all around it's shores. It's pure genius. Does Austin want to be LA because they made a town ake too?

Nobody I know here wants to be LA or for the most part in LA. In fact a lot of us avoid going there at most costs. OC or Mission beach? Sure... LA, for what?

Is it nice being by Vegas and San Diego? Sure. Great places to visit. Would I trade either for Phoenix, not in a heart beat.

Now, let be honest, Phoenix has no identity because it has NO IDENTITY. There is nothing remarkable about the Phoenix area. It is just the big dog in ARIZONA. Phoenix is just Arizona to the rest of the country. When you come to Phoenix for the winter, nobody says "we are going to Phoenix". They say they are going to Arizona. And for what it is worth, most people in the US, when asked, will say the Grand Canyon is in Colorado. So maybe the Super Bowl will help correct that. It is all we can hope for - other than rotten weather that discourages any more people from moving here.

New England represents the northeastern states, and Boston is obviously part of that region.

The Pats changed their name from Boston Patriots when they moved to Foxboro. By New England standards, Foxboro is pretty far outside of Boston. It's not really even Boston-adjacent. More like the Meadowlands is to NYC, but with worse public transportation. Until they got consistently good in the late 80's there were far more Jets and Giants fans in the Boston area than Pats fans, and nobody cared anyway.

The NHL just had their "All-Star Weekend South Florida" hosted by the Florida Panthers (who were "Florida" from the beginning, never "Miami.")

They turned on a massive projection display on the side of the stadium last night. It shows landscape scenes from around Arizona - not Phoenix venues. Arizona is the draw.

Cities that have more transplants than native born residents have identity problems, this is not exclusive to Phoenix. You can make the argument that the entire western united states has an identity problem since it's newer, with no actual ethnic/cultural roots like the South or Northeast has
