My son moved to Roanoke from NOVA as a remote worker and has been shocked at the gas and electric rates. What's up? We were thinking to retire there in a couple years and are looking at cost of living. He's paying more for gas & electric than we are in NOVA in a larger home and while actually being comfortable!

I'm wondering if it is the property itself.

We have a house that was built in 2019 - about 2200 sq. ft.

Our biggest gas bill this winter (Dec.) was $173.

Our biggest electric bill last summer (July) was $79.

After moving here from HOT HOT Texas with astronomical summer electricity bills, I am pleased, I guess.

I have heard from folks who have electric heat who were hit with big charges this past winter.

Good luck. Maybe someone else can chime in!

Our utility bills went through the roof. Both electric and gas were about double with similar use. Gas was around $600/mo in winter. Electric $500 in Summer. It's crazy. 2800sf older home well built in 30's. Also beware personal property taxes on cars. Over $900 on a new Prius. Nuts.

He's barely using the utilities and said many people are saying the costs have skyrocketed over the last year, so I don't think it's age of the house, (it's been completely renovated also). In NOVA, we have Dominion Energy for electric and Washington Gas for our gas service, and there's been no significant increases in our rates. My son said the Nextdoor App for his area has everyone screaming at the rates. Are you in the city of Roanoke?

We are in Botetourt County - north of Roanoke. Service provided by Appalachian Power and Roanoke Gas.
