Paper mill smell??

I smell it mostly on 16, coming into Savannah. Its just one of those things that comes with the territory. I think the marshes stink too, but its like perfume to a lot of people.

The paper mill in Savannah hardly smells at all anymore, to me anyway. That's because when International Paper took it over from Union Camp, they were willing to spend money on modern upgrades and technology that filters much of the stench. Fact is, they didn't have much of a choice: Under Union Camp, that place was a dump and a disaster waiting to happen (a la Sugar Factory) and thus MILLIONS in upgrades were required to bring it up to code. One major side affect is that tourists in the Historic District are seldom subjected to the stench anymore, except on real overcast or cloudy days or when the breeze just happens to be right (or wrong as the case may be).

The one massive paper mill remaining in Brunswick proper still has more bad smelly days than good, but is far enough away from the islands and beaches not to impact tourism. However, the other paper mills along the coast (several within sight of I-95) are the real culprits. Because they are all located in rural areas with little population, scrubbers (the things that filter the stench) aren't standard or required -- and they REEK! The one just south of Midway (easily seen from the interstate) is especially vile. It stinks even on beautiful sunny days.

OH! And lest anyone thinks this is a problem unique to Coastal Georgia ... Paper mills in California stink too!!!

More than the smell of the mills I think we should be more concerned with how much water they are sucking out of the aquifer instead of treating river water. We need to put people over profits in this regard, people in Savannah shouldn't have to drink treated river water when we have artisial well water, just so a large paper mill can save a couple of million a year in costs.
