Me and my husband are planning on moving to Sioux Falls sd from New Jersey for a job opportunity he has but I keep reading all these bad reviews about the crime on the rise and mostly about it being the second highest RAPE state other than Alaska ??! I plan on having children and as a woman myself I do not want to be in constant fear for my future daughters and I getting attacked ! Can someone that lives there please enlighten me on what this very bad statistic is about ? Please I’m extremely worried. Thanks ! Sorry for the rant

Sadly, crime (and rape in particular) can be high on the various Indian Reservations throughout the state due to the poverty rate and problems with alcoholism and drugs in those Reservations. This pushes up the crime rate statistics for the entire state. However, most of South Dakota has a very low crime rate.

Sioux Falls is very safe. Crime is increasing somewhat only because the population is increasing.

The crime rate in Sioux Falls itself is quite low compared to almost every city in New Jersey. To check out accurate statistics by city, check out the main City-Data website.

Thankyou for your responses. I’ve been researching and losing sleep night and day over this. Various websites has said the same horrible things. I’ve been looking on keloland SD news videos and even researching sex offenders itself in the state and sadly most of them or the victims were not nativies. If you can please give some advice on safest places in Sioux Falls to move that would be appreciated . I’ll also add that we have visited for a week in March and we loved it . We went skiing at bear mountain,to the gun range and various restaurants downtown. WE DID NOT feel airy or unsafe at all. We even went late at night to downtown bars and casinos. It’s just all so much to take in with the stats as a wife I want to make the best decision for my family. I also don’t want to make my husband give up a great opportunity over this. We have never lived in the west or mid-west so it’s kind of scary to me. Sorry for the rant again :-/

Well, if it helps, my personal opinion is that New Jersey is the armpit of America.

Why wouldn't you want to leave and go ANYWHERE else?

(If you do come here, maybe don't tell other people that you're from NJ.)

We live e in fort lee NJ and my neighborhood is considered one of the nicer areas. We’re orginally from Long Island NY . Another thing I wanted to address was that other states with even bigger native reserves do not have these bad stats so why does South Dakota ? I’m not downing the state because I LOVED it but as a wife you must see my concern . Thanks ..

lichick101 - you are completely overanalyzing and overthinking this thing. The native reservations situation is abysmal with low employment and high crime but those places are 150-300 miles from Sioux Falls. This is a low crime, low stress city which is very family friendly and frankly probably boring compared to where you come from. If you don't want to move here than so be it but don't look for something that isn't there.

NW NJ is very scenic by the Delaware Water Gap and High Point State Park in Sussex County. However, few people live in that area, just south of I-84. It reminds me of a hybrid of New England and Pennsylvania/Upstate NY.

Nothing east of the Mississippi is better than Sioux Falls.

Sioux Falls is better than Des Moines. Sioux Falls is better than Minneapolis.

It is not as good as Fargo. Of course it is prettier than Fargo and not quite as cold.

Wife loves her home in Texas. She would sell it and move to Sioux Falls if I could get transferred back there.

Cheers

Both Long Island and New Jersey are revolting, overpopulated, nasty places full of unpleasant, loud, screechy people. If you enjoy living there, OP, you won't be happy here at all. South Dakota is too clean and spacious and calm and the people are too nice here; you won't be used to it. Don't bother thinking of coming here anymore. Stay on the East Coast.
