Congratulations! It must feel like winning the lottery! Anyway, we are cooling on the idea for now, we have a nice little home in a great waterfront neighborhood between Bradenton and Sarasota, so we may end up staying awhile. In two years when he retires we will have a better idea about what we want to do. And who knows what will happen in the meantime.

Is there public transportation between Disston Heights and Downtown St. Pete?

I just saw where you all lived at the time you made this post, stay there! That is a fantastic area....

I was born downtown St. Pete. & raised in South St. Pete. (1951-1969) & you couldn't drag me kicking and screaming back there, I'm headed back to the area but to far north Pinellas County, Palm Harbor area.

South St. Pete. is ghetto anymore, sorry to say, anything south of Central Avenue or east of 58th street south is scary. Exceptions are Old Northeast & downtown high rises & Beach Drive area. Very pricey. I know I'll catch hell for this but I lived there (South Pasadena) caring for my mom 2011-2017 & we never ventured into the old neighborhood again at that point. We always took safer (66th street north) routes to get to her doctors near downtown St. Pete. So sad to see what's become of the old hometown.

Old thread, but you are so right. It was the only part of St Pete that I felt unsafe just going through on my bike in the daytime! Sad, because it's laid out well and has a lot of greenery. I think out by the water it's not like that? But no, I wouldn't live in South St Pete either, and I have big city street smarts and felt very uncomfortable the few times I went through it.

Right, old thread, I'm the OP and we ended up moving to Lakeland/Winter Haven and have absolutely zero regrets. Suits us perfectly being retired and not having to deal with crowds of tourists and traffic

Unfortunately, generalizations tend to be too broad. Not ALL of South St Pete is a scare-biscuit.

Neighborhoods like Old Southeast, Roser Park, Tropical Shores, Bahama Shores, Pinellas Point, Maximo and much of Lakewood Estates range from very desirable to at least passable.

Glad to hear this, you made a good choice, middle of the state is something I considered but then decided no more Florida for me, tourists, traffic, snowbirds, hurricanes, insurance costs, heat/humidity, giant flying palmetto bugs, snakes, insects, alligators, etc. I did consider Lakeland too, & Polk County, Lakeland is getting huge too but not as congested as the coasts.
