I am due for renewal and hate the fact that it might take months to get new one while I would be stuck without a passport (need to send "old" passport with the application).
The fact that I wouldn't have any proper ID to leave the country for x amount of time is quite unsettling.

Anyone has a timeline without the expedite service?

elnina, if you have travel in Europe planned you can do it there, since they let you keep your old one until they give you the new one. So could go submit and pay, travel etc. then return a few weeks later to collect the new ones and get your old ones punched. Many countries 10 days max normal service.

DH's is expiring in less than a year, and since many want 6 months left on it, we better get on it. Problem is, we have to send in the old one (via DHL) which has our residency visa glued to one page. So now we will have to carry both old and new passports everywhere.

Thanks for this info, everybody. I wondered how long to allow for getting a new one so now looks like maybe 5 weeks...even without expedite.

I have less than 6 months left and I am back in the States.

I sent my passport for renewal, they cleared my bank check but there is no communication, no status update. No way to check on the progress...or I am missing something?

Oooops, nevermind. Thank you for the link oasis21.
The update says:
You requested routine service when you applied. Routine service can take 8-11 weeks. Our processing times begin the day we receive your application at a passport agency or center.

Ugh, bureaucracy...
I got my PL passport renewed in exactly 5 days ...

It was close to 3 months and it came in to mailings. The new one and the old one came separately a couple days apart.

We have been waiting over 5 weeks for an expedited passport renewal. It has said "processing" as a status for a week now. We are leaving the country in 6 days (or rather, we're supposed to leave). I'm so frustrated. There are no available appointments to go in person, we just have to wait and hope. I wish I could at least know how much longer it was going to take, so I could try to change my flights!

Mine took 17 days from start to finish in the spring. I paid the expedited fee, but I also have a federal government background check on file that probably helped.

I'm very anxious about my own situation. My renewal is for my first passport as an adult. Had my child passport expire over 10 years ago.

Here's my timeline so far:

6/24 - Submitted Application with Expedited Service
6/28 - Application Received

Now as of 7/13, the status is still "In Process", which seems typical.

I'm traveling internationally on 8/7 and I'm aware I'm cutting things very close by relying on things to manifest within the early part of the estimated 5-7 week window.

Has anyone used the National Passport Information Center to assist when they've gotten within 2 weeks of their travel date and haven't received a passport yet?
