who is the overall worst serial killer in US history? I am gonna make a poll, but if you can think of someone I left out, be sure to mention them. I would have to say that the most notorious would be ed gein. he was the one they based silence of the lambs, the texas chainsaw massacre, and psycho after. as for the most disturbing overall, my vote goes to jeffrey dahmer. the reason I am asking is because I saw a couple of A&E biographies about these freaks.

As far as the body count goes, John Wayne Gacy 100% is the champ. As far as damage to the psychology of the community goes, Wayne Williams and Dennis Rader would be tied for 1st place.

rader was bad because of the whole BTK thing. any time you torture someone, it's disturbing, but some of the crap about dahmer goes beyond disturbing. although, he only strangled people, but it was after it was a corpse when he did the really crazy crap.

DONALD HENRY GASKINS, United States. Executed in 1991 for a series of murders, Gaskins likely killed more than 100 people.
HENRY LEE LUCAS, United States. Lucas was sentenced to death for the 1979 murder of an unidentified hitchhiker. In the 1980s, he admitted to hundreds of killings but later recanted and his death sentence was commuted to life in prison.

The thing about Dennis Rader (BTK) was the fact that he psychologically tortured the community. Unlike Gacy and Dahmer- who hid their victims and did not announce themselves, Rader always left his bodies to be found and proudly announced that he had killed them. He had Wichita on virtual "lockdown" for several years. People were arming themselves to the teeth, women were scared to even go to the grocery store alone. People were terrified of him. Gacy and Dahmer operated quietly.
Gary Ridgway, the so-called "Green River Killer," plead guilty to 48 counts of murder, and claims to have committed a total of 71 murders, mostly of prostitutes and sex workers in the western US.
Partly because there are more of them in the United States, and partly because the news viewers and news readers tend to peak towards reading about white males committing such atrocity.
The four names mentioned by OP barely scratched the surface. Check out Crime Library for an extensive list of serial killers. Of all creed and colors!
