It's not the tarantulas that crawl into your shoes, it's the scorpions.

Glad they're still around. We saw quite a few one September south of Tucson, but that area has been paved over now.

Thats rude and stupid. Why kill a harmless critter thats actually helping YOU out? Those things can live 20+ years and you want to kill it just because you dont like em?

Got pictures of the first one.

We just left him alone after taking the pictures.
They eat black widows apparently.

I've only lived here for 1 month, so it's interesting to see one so soon when so many lifetime residents haven't seen them.
Kudos to you for leaving them alone! While those arent the most colorful tarantulas around, you still have to admire the gold, maroon and velvety black colors on them, theyre quite striking! Ive taken them right out of their burrows in Missouri and held them. But, then again, Ive worked with them for years and know what to expect.

I was camping in the Anza Borrego Desert and a tarantula wandered into my campsite. I put my hand down and he crawled into my hand and chilled for a while. I put him in a bag and took him home. He got a nice terrarium with desert sand and rocks to live in. I used to enjoy watching him pounce on the live crickets I fed him but after about a year I took him back to the place where I found him and let him go. I can't remember what I named him (or her !) but it seemed to enjoy sitting in my hand and it never tried to bite me.

I'm horribly arachnophobic, but nothing in me wanted to kill it.
I just wanted to watch it.

Great story, Rickers . . .

Especially the "took him back to where I found him" part.

Don't know why, but this reminded me of "Lassie Come Home"...

OMG!

The Goliath can be 12 inches across?

Cool!

1 inch fangs?

I've seen the "standard" tarantulas in pet stores; heard that they're super mellow. I wish my Mom would've allowed me to have one; I would've been the star of "show & tell" at school.....

This 'lil desert of ours sure has some remarkable creatures. One of the great things about living in AZ.

Our neighborhood has a resident roadrunner; it's cool to see him running along the walls...he was on our roof the other day.
