I'm actually leaning toward Thousand Oaks. Safety is very important to me.

TO is a very clean (sterile?), safe town. Can't go wrong if that is your priority. There are a number of safe inland communities that would fit the bill. Moorpark and Simi are also very safe.

I agree.

I guess I am a bit adventurous....I moved to Ventura County some 10+ years ago as a single woman. No matter where I am, I am always aware of my surroundings. Homeless people and bums don't scare me at all. I'm one of those people who accept fate....I figure I can be robbed in Oxnard just like I can be carjacked at the mall in Thousand Oaks.

I think the OP can find some decent areas in Ventura. One neat thing about Ventura is they do have a lot of touristy shops on Main Street and some decent restaurants. Depending on how old she is, Ventura might be a better fit. Thousand Oaks is nice but definitely HOT in the summer!

I'm 34 and single, and that's exactly what I'm thinking about. I dont mind driving to things but it IS nice to be right by the beach. I've moved around a lot and have often chosen the safe option because I have lived in Chicago in a bad part of town and I hated having to feel limited in my freedom to walk around at night or even during the day. I like to be able to go for a jog at night or just not worry too much ...not to say I'm not aware of my surroundings but I've read a lot of reviews on apartments in the area and it's not uncommon to read about horrible neighbors in Ventura too (not unlike what I experienced in the Laquinta last night). It's very hard to figure it out from a distance and my nightmare would be getting into a lease I feel trapped in, and an apartment I feel trapped in because I don't want to go outside.

of course, I'm talking about apartments that are less than $2000 and I can just about forget about less than $1000 based on what I saw there.

Ok, we are the same age. Would you consider living in Port Hueneme at the beach? I have walked out there recently at night and felt safe. Port Hueneme is no Ventura but it might give you a bit of what you are looking for.

I had friends that lived there and they loved it.

There is quite a variety in downtown Ventura. If your budget is $2000, there is a nice place coming on the market(2BR 2BA, secure building). DM me if interested.

OK. I stand corrected. Homelessness is quite common at beach communities in California.

I suppose the difference is the temperate nature of our beaches vs. Florida beaches. One of the hottest days in memory was at Jax Beach in Florida, right on the water. Wowza - talk about humidity.

The California coast is one of the few spots in the world with a Mediterranean climate. It's the draw behind the "sunshine tax." ;-)
