Seen 49f before. Most winters around 58f is the norm for a while.

The water is very shallow in my area. You can go 50 miles west and only be in 110ft. 20 miles or closer inshore and it is like 20 to 50f.

North Atlantic Sea Surface temps super warm. Sulfur emissions from ships have kept the oceans relatively cool, but these have now been decreased to 1940s levels. In 2020 the new sulphur limit that ships will have to use fuel oil on board with a sulphur content of no more than 0.50% m/m. Less Sulphur = warmer waters. Note where the warmest waters are, shipping lanes

101.1°F (38.4°C) SST reading in Manatee Bay, FL

It was measured at a depth of 1.5 meters. The air above the Florida Keys has not been remotely close to that SST measurement, and even if it was, it would not have mixed down to such a depth in that short amount of time. That is fact.

The official current world record is 99.7°F (37.6°C) from Kuwait Bay in 2020. It's worth noting that Kuwait Bay is located at a higher latitude, so cooler is, by the rule, expected.

Pacific Ocean (off San Diego,) sea surface temp is 71F.

Water beyond 3 NM from shore is generally 2-3 degrees higher.

Waves are 2-3 feet at 11 seconds. (Saw some 4 foot sets this morning.)

Interesting experiment!

Why some new weather buoys are being left in the Great Lakes this winter

https://www.mlive.com/weather/2023/1...is-winter.html

Quote:
As we head into winter, almost all of the buoys that have been bobbing in the Great Lakes during the warmer months have been retrieved and will stay out of the water until springtime. However, the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory is testing out new buoys that can stay in the water all year long. And while they’re floating out there in the cold water, they’ll be collecting data.

Buoys make up an important part of weather forecasting for the Great Lakes and Michigan as a whole. Many buoys record and report weather information like temperatures of the air and water, wave height, and wind speed in areas where normal weather stations can’t be used. This weather data is then used to create forecasts by the National Weather Service and other meteorologists across our state and nearby states, as well as to monitor real-time conditions out on the water

They are smaller, stronger buoys that can withstand the ice buildup on the lakes and will hopefully supply weather and water information year-round.
