Presumably Mr. Masco knows what he's talking about but it seems a big stretch to me to look at this tiny bit of blue in a sea of orange and conclude cold and snowy.

Not a chance for a active winter in FL. The last 6 were bone dry and super warm.

The ECMWF seasonal guidance that came out earlier this week paints a very active picture for the U.S. East Coast this coming winter...

December: an upper trough over the west-central U.S. looks to bring mild, moist, southerly air flows to the eastern seaboard

January: the trough signal slides east and a ridge builds near British Columbia - the East Coast likely isn't as mild as December, but the coldest air will probably still be farther to the west

February: with a strong ridge signal over Alaska and the high latitudes, this month has the highest chance for coastal storms called nor'easters as cold air is deposited southward

Slow start, strong finish?

This go around will be as bad as the last 2 EL Nino's where all the rain missed me to the south. This time it will miss me to the north.

Models projecting a Negative AO for late fall heading to neutral in winter

When the AO is strongly positive, a strong mid-latitude jet stream steers storms northward, reducing cold air outbreaks in the mid-latitudes.

When the AO is strongly negative, a weaker, meandering jet dips farther south, allowing Arctic air to spill into the mid-latitudes.

More from Masco: "When we look at winters that featured an #Elnino and easterly phase of the #QBO .. You see a VERY cold eastern USA and warmer western USA."
