Description: As one enters the park, located south of Shreveport near the town of Mansfield, one will see various monuments depicting the importance of this site, the last great battleground of the Civil War. The 118-acre park has a museum exhibiting Civil War weapons, arms, uniforms, letters, diaries, documents, and other related artifacts. An interpretive trail, named in honor of General Alfred Mouton, winds throughout the site. Group tours are available if you call in advance. A picnic area is also located on the grounds. Let yourself be transported back in time to a place where so many soldiers died in the name of causes each group held dear. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except for major holidays.

Description: Once a thriving Red River entertainment district, this area now appears quiet and deserted. But take time to look at the 10 pillars of the bridge decorated with incredible mosaics that celebrate the rich 200-plus years of the Louisiana Purchase. Nationally renowned artist Diana Salles was commissioned to design four of the three-dimensional works of art. Each piece tells the story of a different group of people who made life in northwest Louisiana possible. Definitely worth a stroll, especially if you are heading to the Riverfront Park.

Description: Easily seen from I-20, this massive mural, which covers more than 30,000 square feet of space on the AT&T building in downtown Shreveport, documents the history, people, triumphs, and tragedies of the area. This project, led by artist Meg Saligman, who has done similar murals in Philadelphia and Mexico City, was completed in 2001. With the assistance of 2,600 volunteers, the mural seeks to illustrate the universal cycle of life and death and how such a cycle provides meaning for a people. At street-level you will find an instructional board that, by using numbers associated to a line-art representation of the mural, will assist you and your children in identifying the persons depicted in this largest publicly funded mural in the United States.
