Description: The turrets, towers, and arches of this Romanesque Revival masterpiece evoke the feel of a medieval castle. Designed by M. A. Orlopp Jr. of New Orleans, the courthouse, which has been called “one of the handsomest in the country,” dominates the town square. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside is a wrought-iron cage elevator, an array of military artifacts, and local mining and mineral specimens. A prominent feature is artist Lowell Davis’s Forged in Fire mural, which vividly portrays the county’s history. The downtown Carthage square is lined with specialty shops: a 1950s-style deli, tearoom, espresso bar, antiques and collectible shops, and craft and gift shops.

Description: A mile north of Carthage is Kendrick Place, one of the few structures in the county to escape the Civil War unscathed. Built in 1849 and used as a command post by both Union and Confederate forces during the conflict, it has now been restored to its pre–Civil War appearance. Call for tour or group meal information.

Description: This cabin from the 1830s served as the county’s first courthouse. You can browse through the retail shop and check out the large collection of Native American artifacts. There’s also a large collection of guns of the types used by Jasper Countians on both sides of the law.

Description: The late-Victorian Phelps family mansion recalls the opulence and elegance of old Carthage. Constructed in the 1890s of huge blocks of gray Carthage limestone, it conveys the image of solid strength so important to the wealthy of that era. The interior displays elaborate and unique features: handpainted wallpaper, beautiful tile mosaics, gold-trimmed woodwork, a Shakespeare stained-glass library window, and a hand-operated rope pulley elevator that serves the four floors. The home has ten fireplaces, all with different color tile. Phelps House is open for tours on Wednesdays, April through November, and can be rented for special occasions. A step-on tour guide for touring buses is available with advance request. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children 6 to 12.

Description: The free museum displays a variety of textiles (quilts and fashions), furnishings, decorative arts, archival resources, and Powers family memorabilia that highlight Carthage’s history from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. If you have an interest in the Victorian era as reflected in Midwestern culture, this is the place for you. The museum was a gift to the community by Marian Powers Winchester in honor of her parents, Dr. Everett Powers and Marian Wright Powers. The museum and gift shop are open February through December, Tuesday through Sunday.

Description: The Victorian Homes Driving Tour is a leisurely drive-by tour of Carthage’s most beautiful and architecturally significant mansions, built between 1870 and 1910. Stop by the Carthage Chamber of Commerce at 107 East Third St., or call them at the number above for a map and descriptive brochure. It’s an especially nice drive during the height of the fall leaf color. Several of the mansions have been converted into bed-and-breakfast inns, including the Grand Avenue Inn, (417) 358-7265, at 1615 Grand Ave., and the Leggett House, (417) 358-0683, at 1106 Grand Ave.

Description: Administered by the National Park Service, this park includes the birthplace and boyhood home of the famous agronomist, botanist, and “stove-top chemist” George Washington Carver (1864–1943). Carver, born a slave, is best known for his development of many uses for the peanut and soybean. The park includes the Carver family cemetery, a museum, and a self-guided nature trail. Picnic facilities are available, and the park often sponsors special afternoon and weekend programs. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The park is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission is free.To reach the Carver National Monument, take US 71 to Diamond, Missouri. Go west 2 miles on MO V and then south about 1 mile. Watch for the signs.

Description: The depot is on North Main Street (you may want to check out some of the flea markets on that street) as you come into town via AR 23 North. You’ll enjoy the historic station, gift shop with train memorabilia, and vintage railroad car and steam engine display—all free. The ride itself lasts about an hour. You’ll be pulled in vintage steam locomotive comfort and enjoy lunch in a restored dining car while a panorama of scenery passes by your window. Check the depot for the schedule and prices.
