23. Independence Square
City: Kansas City, MO
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (816) 252-0608
Description: Independence has it all: infamous outlaws and a hometown hero, bloody border battles of the Civil War, and opulent homes. At its heart is Independence Square, which marked the beginnings of Harry S. Truman’s political career and the journey for thousands heading west. Within the old-fashioned town square you’ll find the 1859 Jail and Truman Office and Courtroom as well as antiques shops, unique stores, and restaurants. And there’s a phosphate or banana split waiting for you at Clinton’s Soda Fountain (100 West Maple), where a young Harry once scooped ice cream and mopped the floor. He’d later say his weekly salary of three silver dollars looked like three million.

27. Rice-Tremonti Home
City: Kansas City, MO
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (816) 358-7423
Description: In 1844, Archibald Rice’s 160 acres were a popular place to camp while waiting for spring before heading west on the trails. The homestead wasn’t as fancy as some others still with us today, but that’s the key to its fascination; its furnishings provide a glimpse into the way families lived in what was once wilderness. The home is now on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the most interesting attractions is a replica of Aunt Sophia’s cabin, where the family’s slave lived. Sophia would cook the meals here and then carry them to the main house. Tours are available Sat and Sun from May through Sept.
