Description: Located 11 miles from Uptown on US 29 North near UNC Charlotte, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater attracts some of North Carolina’s biggest concerts and music festivals during its warm-weather season, which runs from April through October. Guests can bring a blanket and relax outside with refreshments from the concession areas (sorry, you can’t bring your own). Performers have included Sting, Rod Stewart, Dave Matthews Band, Alan Jackson, Blink 182, Fleetwood Mac, Rush, and John Mayer.

Description: Wing Haven was only a bare three-acre patch of land in 1927 when Edwin and Elizabeth Clarkson built their home and began working on their garden in this quiet pocket of Myers Park. Now, more than 75 years later, the fruits of their labor include formal gardens, wooded areas, pools, and fountains in a peaceful city retreat.The gardens are now the responsibility of the Wing Haven Foundation, a nonprofit corporation. Membership is open to anyone. The gardens are open 3 until 5 p.m. Tues, 10 a.m. to noon Wed, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sat. Guided tours may be arranged Tues, Thurs, and Fri mornings. Admission is $5 per person.

Description: Discovery Place is one of the largest and most exciting science and nature museums in the country. It contains the OMNIMAX Theater, a planetarium, a replica of a tropical rain forest, aquariums, computer labs, discovery areas for young children, and much more. The museum offers classes, workshops, and day camp activities for children of all ages.Discovery Place hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mon through Fri; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat; and noon until 5 p.m. Sun. Museum admission is $10 adults and $8 children and seniors. Combo tickets that include an IMAX showing range from $16–$19 for adults, and $13–$15 for children and seniors. Description: Children of diverse backgrounds explore African-American history and heritage at this fabulous museum in the Wells Fargo Cultural Campus in Uptown. The center includes an art gallery with changing exhibits, theater and musical productions, and a wide range of classes and programs for all ages. Subjects include African-American role models, literature, art, jazz history, folk crafts, and music.Hours are 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tues through Sat, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sun. Admission is $8 per person, and $5 per person for seniors and groups.
