Description: Rapid City’s smaller licensed hospital was built by doctors. It is a specialty hospital where many surgical procedures can be performed, including neurosurgery and dental, pediatric, gynecological, and other operations. This 23-bed center does not accept heart attack victims or patients requiring intensive care, as it does not have an emergency room or intensive-care facilities. It specializes instead in most routine (and some advanced) surgical procedures, both inpatient and outpatient.

Description: This Indian Health Service primary-care hospital is one of just three such facilities in the nation not located on a reservation. It was founded in the early 1950s as a tuberculosis sanitarium. Operated by the federal government, the 32-bed hospital treats only Native American patients. Services and facilities include an emergency room, community health nursing (home care), specialty clinics such as dentistry and optometry, walk-in clinics, and the only mental health inpatient unit in the Indian Health Service. There are no facilities for surgery or obstetrics, which are handled at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Description: Rapid City Regional Hospital was created in 1973. It is a 417-bed regional medical center providing services in more than 40 medical specialties. Description: Above and beyond raising money for research, the local office of the American Cancer Society provides educational materials and programs to heighten cancer awareness, and it has a number of volunteer services for patients.
