Description: Here’s an eatery right out of the 1950s, complete with shiny metal exterior, juke box, pressed-tin ceilings, black-and-white tile floors, Formica tables, neon accents, and waitresses dressed in ’50s attire. The menu covers a lot of ground, including char-grilled Angus burgers, a variety of sandwiches, steaks, and good old-fashioned Southern specialties (like fried green tomatoes, liver and onions, and grits). Another plus: you can order breakfast all day long here. The pies and cakes on the dessert menu are all handmade, and the hand-dipped milk shakes are simply scrumptious to the very last slurp. From May to October, The Diner offers a Casual Cruise-in on Saturday nights. Parties who drive up in classic cars get a 10 percent discount on their bill.

Description: Clint Carnley learned to cook on his back porch and got to be such a master at barbeque that dozens of friends and family members at a time would flock to his place for supper. So many people told him he should open his own restaurant that Clint eventually did just that. But he does more than cook for this family-owned and family-operated restaurant. On Tuesday nights, the former professional musician has been known to get out his guitar and walk around the place, strumming and singing for his customers.Clint’s menu includes everything from grilled cheese to shrimp and steaks, but the specialty here is barbeque (including pulled pork, chicken, and ribs). Leave room for the homemade desserts, as well.

Address: 304 Apple Valley Road

Description: Down the street a bit from the Apple Valley Farms is a very different sort of eatery housed in a converted 1900 farmhouse. The Tin Roof Cafe started out in 2008 as a coffeehouse (with free wireless Internet) that soon expanded into a bakery/cafe offering fabulous lunches and dinners with celebrated desserts. The menu has included such dishes as leek and potato soup; curry chicken salad; and turkey, apple, and brie paninis. The delectable desserts here include lemon tarts, sweet potato pie, and Oreo cupcakes, to name just a few. Speaking of sweets, try the frozen hot chocolate. In the summer, it’s the most popular drink order. You can dine inside or out (choosing either the front or back porch), in a peaceful setting just across the road from the river.
