Description: Once the old Nelson County Jail, the Jailer’s Inn offers comfortable lodging and a lovely breakfast in the back courtyard where prisoners were once executed. Description: Nothing fancy but a good place for a country breakfast or sandwich, Mammy’s Kitchen is popular with locals. Plenty of pinto beans and cornbread, the traditional Kentucky hot brown, grilled cheese, and barbecue sandwiches are served during lunch. Mammy’s looks as though it has held many businesses before. The decor is country, with a bunch of knick-knacks and well-worn booths. Located on the main drag, the place is easy to find. A huge cow stares out the front window, a Minnie Pearl hat complete with price tag perched on the cow’s head.

Description: The Bluff View Art District is in a quiet area of downtown Chattanooga, along the Tennessee Riverwalk and just a 0.25-mile walk from the Tennessee Aquarium. The district includes the Hunter Museum of American Art and the Bluff View Inn as well as a handful of restaurants. From this area you can climb the steps to the century-old steel-truss Walnut Street Bridge, a 0.75-mile linear park and pedestrian bridge, the longest pedestrian-walkway bridge in the world.

Description: History and Civil War buffs will want to be sure to visit this attraction, America’s first and largest national military park. Just across the state line from Chattanooga, Chickamauga/Chattanooga National Military Park is dedicated to the memory of Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the 1863 battle here. An audiovisual presentation explaining the battle and its significance in the war is offered at the Chickamauga Battlefield Park Headquarters and Visitor Center. A collection of Fuller guns is also on display. Point Park, atop Lookout Mountain, is an extension of the park and serves as a memorial to the soldiers.

Description: A unit of the Chickamauga/Chattanooga National Military Park, Point Park was built in 1905 to commemorate the November 1863 “Battle Above the Clouds,” one of the most dramatic battles of the Civil War. Panoramic views of Chattanooga and the Tennessee River and a history of the Battle of Lookout Mountain await visitors. Monuments, markers, and a museum pay tribute to the soldiers who fought and died in the area. The park is on the northern crest of Lookout Mountain. Point Park is open daily.

Description: Newfound Gap Road, or US 441, leads through the center of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, winding southeast on its way over the mountains and into North Carolina. This route will take you to or near a number of scenic overlooks, hiking trails, and other points of interest, including Chimney Tops, Mount LeConte, Clingmans Dome, Newfound Gap, and Cherokee.

Description: The gap between these dual peaks, about 2,000 feet high, has the appearance, to some, of a flue; hence the name. You can see the peaks from the Chimney Tops overlook on Newfound Gap Road. Just 5 miles up the road from the Sugarlands Visitor Center is the Chimneys picnic area. This highly popular spot, in a ravine, contains plenty of picnic tables and a mountain stream filled with big boulders that are perfect for resting, sunning, or walking across the stream.
