The only reason #3 is an issue is because the media makes it one. As stated above, that was Childress number before Earnhardt ever moved to Cup. Earnhardts family used the number 8 or some variant of it.....if we are going to be technical about it.
As for Dillon, he came up through the ranks. Yes, he had top equipment along the way, but I saw him in a dirt late model in 2007. I swear there wasn't anything he didn't hit. But he's definitely matured and worked his way up. I think Childress and Earnhardt Sr treated the younger generation the same. That is, they supported them 100%, but expected 100% in return.
Apparently the 3 issues is a total non-issue. The Earnhardt family approved it.

Childress consulted with Earnhardt's before using #3: The late Dale Earnhardt's famed #3 will be back on track in the elite Sprint Cup Series next season with Austin Dillon using the number. The move has been long anticipated because car owner Richard Childress has allowed his grandson to use the #3 as he's moved through NASCAR's ranks. Childress said he's consulted with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister, Kelley, every time he's moved the #3 to a different level on the track and the Earnhardt family has been supportive. Earnhardt Jr. declined to use the #3 following his father's death, but has raced the number in the Nationwide Series. "I would be worried if I didn't think he'd respect it or not understand the legacy, but he does. I know he does. He appreciates it," Earnhardt Jr. said last week of Dillon using the #3.(Associated Press)(12-12-2013)
The dude I'll be rooting for most in the rookie battle is Parker Kligerman. Two Top-25 finishes for the underfunded new team SWAN Racing.
For the regular season, I'll be rooting on Tony Stewart as always. Would love to see him contend so soon after major injury. Would love to see Marcos Ambrose finally win on some ovals. With JPM gone, he's the top level's only consistent international presence. He's a good personality, we all know NASCAR needs more of those so here's to the Tasmanian making the Chase!
Gibbs has seen last year will be strong.Three top driver that can compete against anyone with Hamiln more motivated than ever.Penske certainly a factor but they need at least a third driver. Hendrick showed by end of season with new cars they once again figured them out best by far.At last races they were really fast and handled great thru out races. Ford had problems on consistency all year and Toyota handled well at certain tracks and showed more pure speed than in past years.; but some reliably problems that like they are concentrating on. As Brad said its hard to race Johnson when he is that much faster overall in a race.

Jack Roush still thinks he knows more than his competitors and again will not win.

Michael Waltrip will win biggest NASCAR ass kisser competition.
All the teams will be chasing Hendrick because just like in F1 whoever spends the most wins the most. Been that way since day one in racing.
By most reports Red Bull doesn't spend nearly what Ferrari or McLaren spend.
Can't wait to cheer him on! Bill Elliot is a big favorite of mine, but I didn't start following NASCAR until 2005.
