I never got the appeal of BMW motorcycles or cars.

The BMW in-line 6 is known as one of the smoothest engines and was way ahead in the handling department for years... maybe why their moniker for years was the "Drivers Car"?

Wasn't BMW the one motorcycle that pioneered using a drive shaft vs. a chain and sproket?

I had a '73 BMW R-750 that was just as reliable as the sunrise even though it had about 100k on the clock when I bought it. It provided one cross country ride as well as years of fun in New England. I am planning on buying another this winter when they are cheap.

IMHO BMW cars are over priced and over rated. I prefer my Subie on snow with four good tires. The only car I could get 90 deg sideways and recover with throtle and counter steering practicing skid recovery in a snow covered parking lot.

PS - I paid $1500 for my last car. For the whole 4500 pounds of Buick Roadmaster Wagon.

BMW is the "Ultimate Driving Machine".. if you live in Woodside, Beverly Glen, Topanga, or do long hauls on the interstate, there isn't much that can match it.

I remember a neighbor of mine complaining about the cost of a 30K service on his Z3 years ago. I believe an independent charged him ~$400, and the dealers wanted $600 for the 30K service.

If I recall, tires are not included.

BMW says 15,000 miles in between oil changes. So that's only 3 changes.

Also kjeep in mind they are quoting DEALER service prices in those ads. You can probably do your own maintenance for less than $300 in 50k (not including tires)

I looked it up for the hell of it. Inspection 1 at 30K is labor intensive:

Not by a long shot. FN (fabrique national) in Belgium built shafties starting around 1910.

There's a host of other manufacturers in there, too ... Zundapp, for one. While a later manufacturer, MotoGuzzi is one of my favorites after having owned a few early R-50 and R-60 BMW's (and a stray R-27), then on to V-700/750/850's from MG.

The concept of shaft drive in a two wheeler started with shaft drive bicycles as far back as the 1860's.
