BMW ads say a new car requires $1,500 in maintenance costs during the first 50K miles. What's the breakdown on that? Seven oil changes and tire rotations, less than $300, What else is there? Refill lthe windshield washer reservoir . . .Am I missing out on some big-ticket maintenance items by not buying a new Beamer?
A BMW oil change is about $160 a pop, but they vary in frequency. Could be anywhere from 8,000 miles to 18,000 miles. Figure about 3 oil changes in the 50K miles.
New tires, around $200 a tire.
Probably one brake job in there, so another $500 - $600.

I rode BMW motorcycles for decades and all I did was work on mine for some reason or the other. I can't imagine their cars being much better. It took me a long time to wise up and sell the BMW.
I think you must be mistaken on this one. Even if they require synthetic, I still can not see a reason for them to be this much. I see the shops advertise $69 for a Mobil One oil change and Mobil One filter all the time.

Nope. I own a BMW Z4, and oil changes are around $150 a pop if you let them do it. Oil + service + labor = $$$.
The BMW service ads assume some things, like you drive like a madman if you get the Lexus instead of the BMW. Thing is though, if you're going to get the Lexus first, you really don't want to go fast ... not seriously anyway. The only car they got which is serious is the IS-F, and even then, it is more expensive than a M3, so you shouldn't get it anyway unless you're bonkers. Thus my point is those assumptions are nuts and shouldn't drink the Kool-aid.

Probably some retarded proprietary system where the oil needs to be sucked through the dipstick tube.
Definitely. A brake job and tires add up fast. Generally, both are needed at < 50k miles.
Then the assorted other recommended or needed services or parts like intake and cabin air filters, wiper blades, brake fluid flush, etc...
It doesn't take many stops for service, to get to $1500.
