This can not be emphasized enough. Proving you can hemorrhage cash to host large scale events puts the underscore on the fact Birmingham is ill-equipped to do such.

I'm a business owner so maybe my logic is flawed to some of you, but vaporizing copious amounts of capital in the interest of self-image is a comically flawed and terrible approach to running anything.

Too many people are obsessed with somehow proving Birmingham is not the Birmingham of the past. That we have somehow “arrived” on the world stage. They are willing to lose money to do so. They are now trying to make Birmingham into some kind of event city that will basically bid for just about everything. The fireman games or whatever it’s called is another example

This is true. Look what it did economically and globally for Karlsruhe, The Hague, Lahti, Akita, Duisburg, Cali, and Wrocław. Those powerhouses are unstoppable.

I do agree it was a good look for the city but we were also sold that it would be game-changing. People on this board made big economic and reputational changing claimes.. None of which will happen.

And who's paying for this "good look for the city"? Local businesses that closed down? Taxpayers? When will we see a benefit from it? Probably never in all actuality. Sure it's a good look and Bham did a great job with them. But at what cost?

Kinda like winning a James Beard award didn't even keep Highlands open, and STILL not open.

The World Games has outstanding invoices totaling $15,656,173 owed to more than 100 companies or individuals, according to a list obtained by AL.com. Fifty-seven of the companies are identified on the list as either local to the Birmingham area or diverse (minority- or women-owned).

World Games CEO Nick Sellers would not comment on the list, other than to confirm the difference between the amount of outstanding invoices and the previously reported $14.1 million in debt from the 11-day event represents cash-on-hand and accounts receivable.
Local folks getting screwed. Well done.

News like this ensures no vendors will support a Birmingham event in the near future. Does this fall more on Woodfin, TWG committee, or who?

I think any blame should go on the TWG committee. They were in charge of sponsorships, expenses, budget, etc. World Games wasn't selected under Woodfin, he's just been more of a cheerleader for it.

such a strange proposal that was.

honestly, maybe this should go under "Cool News".

Anyone know why Bogue's closed? I loved that place and considered it a staple. On a similar note, what's the deal with Highlands Bar & Grill still being closed? I don't know of any other restaurant that isn't permanently closed still not being re-opened. It's very clear the demand is there, so why is it still closed? I wonder if there's more behind the scenes than we're being told?

Bump: I know the Uncool News section likes to get overlooked around here but I really want to know what the deal is with Highlands Bar & Grill. I think we could accurately call it the flagship restaurant of the city/state and it's still closed. Surely there's something else at play. Maybe lack of qualified workers? I know Frank is going to be quite particular about who he hires. You'd think he'd want to open asap to get the money flowing again.

I'm not aware of any other "flagship" restaurant anywhere that hasn't been back open for a while now. Obviously, there are probably a hand full, I'm just not aware of them.
