Fire on top of MBTA Green Line train leads to service delays (wcvb.com)

"BOSTON —Regular service on the MBTA's Green Line has resumed after a small fire broke out on top of the train, according to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
An MBTA spokesperson said the fire, which started around the rooftop pantograph device, was reported shortly after 4:55 p.m. Saturday and was quickly extinguished.
The Green Line train was at the platform of the Boylston MBTA Station when the fire started."

I think I'll continue to avoid the MBTA.

I still can’t get to Boston from New Bedford on public transportation other than a couple of early morning rush hour buses. I’m not optimistic that the train is going to improve that when it shows up in 20 months.

Design plans nearing completion for overhaul of South Attleboro train station, official says

I just read this week in the Attleboro Sun that State Politicians, have notified the MBTA to get moving on this overhaul of this station. They want this station repaired and opened, it has been closed now for a year. When operating it is the busiest station in the Commuter Rail Network. The stations location right on the MASS/RI line at I-95 is a major source of transport, for Commuters into Boston or into RI. People that now have nothing for transportation other than their vehicles, adding to further congestion on regional roads when commuting.

I can vouch on just how bad off this particular station was. I was terrified every time I walked over that overpass high above the tracks. I would wonder every time would it collapse today while I walked over those tracks to the platform. The stairs up to the overpass were so completely rusted, that they were hanging on by a thread. The overpass itself I honestly don't know how any structure that rusted out could remain standing. The decay of the structure went on for years. I never could understand why was it was allowed to rot like this. Such an obvious safety hazard and nothing done about it. I was so glad to hear finally something was done about it. Fortunately I only was using it in recent years when visiting Attleboro. I could not imagine a daily commuting having to deal with that. So perhaps this push from the Politicians will get the MBTA, to quickly move on getting this station up and running again.

That's weird, because they are building a new stop not very far. I'm not sure where it actually is but it's in Central Falls.

South Attleboro is not the busiest station outside Boston. It is not even the busiest on this line as Mansfield, Attleboro, and Providence have more daily passengers. I however believe that all four of these stations are in the top 10 for passengers at commuter rail stops outside the city.

A new station is presently being built just two miles further south in Pawtucket close to the Central Falls line. It is scheduled to open later this year. It will not have the same easy access just off the highway and less parking than South Attleboro.
