I think there were 75 or so arrested here in Savannah. Lots of public drinking.

I thought public drinking was allowed in Savannah? Like you can walk down the street drinking?

"Savannah allows open containers in most of the city's Historic District and across the Savannah River on Hutchinson Island, but only in plastic 16-ounce cups. Additionally, drinks are limited to one cup per person."

The arrest numbers tell an incomplete story. With hundreds of thousands of people pouring into the neighborhood, many of whom have been drinking and planning to get rowdy, the police have to decide how they want to manage their resources. So people get away with things they would never get away with any other day of the year. I personally saw numerous shoving matches, a ton of public urination, lots of public drinking in view of the police (one of our friend's neighbors even put a keg on the sidewalk until they were asked to bring it back inside), all without anyone being arrested. Most weren't even acknowledged. The difference between Boston and Savannah or Newport's numbers probably say more about enforcement strategies than they do about behavior.

I have never done St. Patrick's Day in Savannah (though I do know they have a big celebration), but I have done Newport's plenty of times. It's a pretty similar rowdy crowd in both places.

Bottom line is that the parade has become too big for its britches. It says something when SB pols are calling for its relocation. St Patrick's Day itself has in recent years become much different than it ever was, and not in a good way. It's now a day of heavy partying nationwide for college students and young professional people with absolutely no interest or connection to Irish heritage. You wear the obligatory green articles of clothing and then proceed to drink and in many cases act loud and obnoxiously. It was always a drinking and partying day but with a connection to Irish heritage. Now it's just a day for conformists to wear green, party and act like fools. I refuse to wear green now on that day, as it's become almost trendy.

I guess I always recall st paddy's day being big but I am of irish descent living in the Boston area. It's hugely celebrated all over though. I saw someone posting posting pics from a st Patrick's day parade in Hawaii. I haven't noticed it becoming a bigger deal in recent years ?

Holidays in general are all on crack these days it seems. I blame social media. Everyone's gotta put up their social media pics of what they did on every holiday. Easters next.

The kid at the end pointing and laughing! I would love for someone to kick him down a flight of stairs.
