I was just going to answer that marijuana smoke may not be as common as cigarette smoke here but it's still very very common.
Of course it depends on which part of town you're in but there are areas where you smell it a lot, more often than not when you're out and about.
I wasn't strongly opposed to decriminalization, but am still astonished that you can smoke weed while walking down the street and blow the smoke into kids' faces, but you can't walk down the street drinking a beer in a can.

About a month ago, I had an appointment at the childrens hospital with my daughter. I noticed going in and coming out of the hopsital, people smoking both cigarettes and pot near the door. Even though there were signs indicating smoking was no longer permitted on the property. I think this sort of blatant disrespect for the rules is more of a Winnipeg thing. For the most part though, I think people in general are respectful of the rules.

Even more concerning people smoking weed in public. I know a few people that work at day cares. They have found needles at parks. Playgrounds now have to be routinely combed through to make sure there are no needles. I know we have to be compassionate with people that "self medicate" at the same time, many of these people don't give a **** about leaving needles around where kids play and people walk through. I have seen people smoking meth and even shooting up at bus shelters. They do not give a **** who is around.
Fentanyl it's self is a very deadly drug. It is not exactly new though, its been around a while. The truth of the matter is, most drug addicts were getting arrested for breaking the law to feed their habit, not for simply carrying small amounts of heroin, crack etc. People can deny this all they want but drug addiction leads to more crime. Theft, fraud, assualts, prostitution etc.
We all have stress and traumas in our lives. Dissmissing drug use as simply "self medicating" is not doing anyone any good.
Of all accidental apparent opioid toxicity deaths so far in 2023 (January – September), 82% involved fentanyl. This percentage has increased by 44% since 2016 when national surveillance began but appears to have stabilized in recent years.
Of all accidental apparent opioid toxicity deaths so far in 2023 (January – September), 82% involved opioids that were only non-pharmaceuticalFootnote7Footnote

I'm getting the impression that you are interpreting "self-medicating" in a derogatory way. But I am not meaning it as a positive or a negative - many people who have mental health problems use alcohol and drugs to cover their symptoms. That's why it's called self-medicating. It's not meant as an excuse unless you believe mental health problems aren't real. Nor does it mean that everyone using alcohol/drugs has mental health problems.

I understand what you are getting at though I think it's fairly appropriate to be condescending or at least cynical about this so-called "self-medication". The definition of medication is something you take that is supposed to improve your condition. Taking dangerous hard drugs whose purpose is not the treatment of any condition you might have, can hardly be called true "medication".
