My grandfather had a ring with a 1-carat diamond in it when he was taken to the hospital (he died on the way). He hadn't had the ring off his hand for years as it wouldn't go past his knuckle without being cut off.

It wasn't on his hand when he reached the funeral home the next day. We believed the funeral home people; we had used them several times and they had a sterling reputation in the community.

The paramedics knew nothing, the ER knew nothing, the morgue knew nothing. Apparently the ring somehow got itself past the knotty arthritic knuckle and disappeared into the ozone.

Rotten people out there.

It almost sounds like there is a ring-of-thieves out there preying on people who are non-compos mentis in these facilities.

Perhaps it might be a good idea to scout out the local pawn shops and show them pictures of stolen items. I'm sure some of the poorly-paid staff might feel justified in helping themselves although you can't accuse them. It could be a resident has the quilt somewhere and perhaps a small reward could be offered if it is "found".

My sister was in a care facility after a dreadful accident in August of 2019. She passed away last summer. What used to get taken from her room were the brand new clothes I sent her. I am in Oregon and she was in NY. Unfortunately COVID prevented my visiting her so I couldn't keep track. It was always the new stuff that went, as her POA would tell me. When her friend made noise, something things would surface by magic.

My husband can't be alone so when my daughter's wedding took place last month, I hired a friend-of-a-friend to come stay with him. He's been here before to do odd jobs. Nice guy, not much upstairs but took care of the DH. Unfortunately, an envelope marked with someone's name was on the desk in DH's room that had some cash in it. It disappeared. So did DH's wallet. We found the wallet stuffed into a chair. The envelope? Gone. Did our caregiver take it? Did the DH lose it somewhere? Who knows... ? Sigh.
