It's over 8 years old. Eight years used to be the end of life for Chromebook, now pushed out to 10. Often times what happened is some company made a cheap Chromebook in 2013 and then sold it for two years. So right there you've gone from 8 years down to 6. Then it doesn't sell and sits in a warehouse until it gets sold as ewaste and gets listed up on Amazon with a big discount. At this point it's 4-5 years old but some uninformed buyer thinks they're getting a great deal since it's 56% off! They hate it because it's budget badness from 5 years ago and then of course they hate it even more when after three years it tells them it's too old for updates anymore. Those early cheap Chromebooks were pretty much just Netbooks. They could do light web browsing but chunked on heavier ones like Facebook, email, basic word processing. That was about it.

I got my wife an Acer Chromebook 2 years ago, and she sort of hates it. It's fine for surfing the web, but she does a lot of Zoom meetings and unfortunately it doesn't work as well as Windows/Mac.

Plus, it's gotten slower and slower.

I'm thinking of getting her a Macbook Air. She's a Windows person (as I used to be) but after you get used to the "Mac" way of doing things, it's a pretty simple user interface and everything just works.

I'm of the mindset that Chromebook was obsolete the day it hit the retail shelves....

The basic iPad with a typecover replaced the Chromebook for me. I never hated it, but then I spent a bit more (still under $300) for one with an SSD rather than slowskie eMCC flash memory. The Chromebook/iPad basically serve the same function. Videoconferencing was why the Chromebook was replaced. The iPad is much better for that so once COVID came along the Chromebook was no longer really doing what I needed. I'm not a Mac person and get none of the advantages of being in that environment where the iPad works with the Macbook. It's just tough to beat an iPad though as much as I'm pre-conditioned to wish that wasn't the case.

A NOVEL OPTION
It’s portable and it’s flexible and it’s powerful and it’s inexpensive.
A mini PC + wireless keyboard / mouse
connected to your monitor / TV.
(can be mounted on the back, via bracket)

Ex: Beelink U59 Mini PC 11th Gen 4-Cores N5105, Office Mini Computer 16GB DDR4 500G SSD, Dual Display 4K UHD 60Hz; Dual LAN/WiFi5/BT4.0; Windows 10
$230 - $50 discount = $180 (backlevel!)
https://www.amazon.com/Beelink-U57-P...RKH/ref=sr_1_5
(There are many options in that form factor, including game frame versions $$$)

Add a Logitech wireless keyboard mouse: $23
Logitech MK270 Wireless Keyboard And Mouse Combo For Windows
https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-MK27...5M5/ref=sr_1_3

If you don’t have or want to use a 4K TV for your monitor, you can get portable monitors for around $76.
MNN Portable Monitor 15.6inch FHD 1080P USB C
https://www.amazon.com/MNN-Portable-...XVP/ref=sr_1_3
(The Beelink has 2 HDMI ports, and can drive 2 monitors / 4K UHDTVs)

I currently have a Mini PC that has a RYZEN 5 5600U, 6 core | 12 thread cpu, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, and runs Windows 11. Got it on sale during Black Friday. Works great. And sips power - no noisy fan noise.
Next level up RYZEN 7 5700U (8 core | 16 threads).

BEELINK $279 ($100 more for the latest / greatest)
Mini PC AMD Ryzen 7 5700U (8C/16T, Up to 4.3Ghz), 16GB DDR4 RAM 500GB NVMe SSD, SER5 Pro Mini Desktop Computer Support 4K@60Hz/Triple Display/WiFi6/BT5.2/

https://www.amazon.com/Beelink-Deskt...8K7/ref=sr_1_3

Disadvantage : [] no battery pack portability option for MiniPCs

43" 4K UHDTVs are under $250 in some models. . . BIG Screen . . .
$179 limited time offer on this :
https://www.amazon.com/INSIGNIA-43-i...TK3/ref=sr_1_1
Paired with a MiniPC, it should rock.

Guy using an 4K TV for his monitor. . .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQGYHTc51NE

[] Note - any large screen (32" or bigger) will appear distorted when sitting close to it. The edge distortion is very evident on wide screen UHD monitors and TVs (over 32") - it seems like the edges are bending away from you. You can mitigate that problem with a CURVED screen.

(For the benefit of folks considering a new device and might be trying to learn about what works and what doesn't.)

They will have a shorter life span than other laptops.

Agreed (sort of). There are folks with $200 Chromebooks that are getting a shorter life-span than $500 Windows laptops...go figure! I suppose I'm biased because I'm old school. Decades ago we never expected to get more than 5 years out of a laptop (maybe a couple years more if it costs $3,000). For me, if I get 8 years out of my $250 Chromebook, I will be totally satisfied that I did not buy obsolete junk.

As previously stated, Chromebook lifespan has supposedly increased...so we shall see.
