A few years back when I retired I decided to take some college classes. My wife bought me a new Chromebook to take to class. Turned out, it was not compatible with Blackboard, the program colleges were using for on-line work. Put it away and took an old W 7 laptop and it worked fine. A couple days ago my grandson was over here and wanted to watch a couple movies on line. Got out the Chromebook and found out it is obsolete. Google will not allow it to be updated and it won't even do Facebook. Got out the old W 7 Dell and he watched movies on it. It worked fine. How do companies like Google get by with selling their junk?

By selling a brand new product or device every two years, because the old ones have been 'deprecated'.

So out of curiosity, the movie didn't work either? Which version of Facebook didn't work...Android app or browser version?

Unlike W7, a deprecated Chromebook means a deprecated browser as well. FWIW, Google has vowed to support new Chromebooks longer (10 years I believe) than they used to.

"A few years back when I retired"...a "few" usually means 3...just how old is the chromebook ? Mine is 5 years old and functions as it should.

How long do Chromebooks last ?

At the risk of saying something that might be completely obvious, consider having some help getting a proper linux installed on the device in order to side step the planned obsolescence. Chrome OS, IIRC, actually uses Gentoo linux as its foundation anyway. Might as well take it all the way and ditch the google crap.

Do a Powerwash on the Chromebook and set it up fresh

Chromebook blocks all other OS.

It usually involves loosening a write-protect screw and placing the Chromebook into developer mode in order to install non-Google sanctioned OSes.

I wouldn't call it blocked, but instead obfuscated.

Chromebooks start at what $150 right? 200-300 probably the 'typical' cost with some high end models going up to 400-500. Now Windows laptops 'entry' models are usually what 300-400 with a more typical machine being more like 600-700 and higher end machines usually going well beyond 1k and even over 2k?

So your Chromebook is probably like half the price of a regular laptop, I mean it costs the amount of an average weekly grocery run these days, it's obviously not exactly designed to be a lifetime investment.

Chromebooks imo are good for light web surfing, reading emails paying bills.
