Yes, I think there is a strong connection, but most will not buy it. It has to do with God. Our nation has over the past 50 years become quite Godless compared to 50 years ago. The Bible teaches that prosperity or poverty come from God. Think about it, why would God bless a country that almost completely rejects Him, His laws and Himself. Don't flame me, just MHO.

Think of countries like Sweden and Norway. very irreligious population. amazing quality of life.
God hasn't ever helped us much when we are in trouble. God hasn't helped the Muslims or the Jews either, and all of us worship a single God.
While I believe in the Almighty, I don't think he does much for us but make us feel good about the hereafter. I certainly don't think he's very interested in Divine Intervention any more, and hasn't been since the days of the Old Testament.
I'm not sure at all that our future is bleak. It is in our hands, and we can return to prosperity and peace; we have done it before in times worse than this. But if we lack the will for the common good now, we will have a harder row to hoe, and it will take us all longer to accomplish what we all want.

Many people ran towards the explosion to help the injured, if God does exist, those people are angels from God.
America is on a downward trend, but few really understand the reason why. There are positives, like the growth in the oil business. We may very well be energy independent in 10 years or so. On the other hand, there are big negatives, the retirement of the baby-boomers will stretch and strain the federal budget and taxes will continue to go up and this will be a drag on the economy, and add in OBamacare, and you have real first class pain. But the big problem is the moral problems, the continued increase in drug use, and the decline of the nuclear family. Studies have shown that children raised in single parent homes have more problems, they are more likely to be involved in crime, poor school performance etc. People are getting more selfish, more self centered, lazier, more dishonest, and all those will definitely mean a lower quality of life for most. The society is just plain falling apart and become more like a third world country like Haiti. Its not going to be pretty in the future.
Wow talk about "drama Queens"! If I were a "betting" man the last thing I would be "betting" against is the US!
Is drugs a real problem? Of Course! Not having stable homes? of course!
but is that all of America? Look at the people of Boston today? How they rose and took care of each other!
We can address drugs, poor school perfomance, etc
We always rise to the occasion.
A optomistic American! Otherwise we should have thrown in the towel after 9/11 or Pearl Harbor!
Good old days. Jewish grandparents escaped Ukraine around turn of the last century. Grandfather was a tailor and worked in a factory and raised ten kids (nine of whom survived childhood). All finished high school, a couple fought in WW2 and all started small businesses- wig shop, dress shop, taxi.
Non-Jewish grandparents, grandfather from Ukraine died from pneumonia while working on the docks a few years before antibiotics became available (1930s). Grandmother left school after second grade to work in box factory- child labor being legal- and later cleaned houses and lived in one-room walkups with the bathroom in the hallway.
No real birth control. Prejudice against Jews and other "others." No rights for women.
I'll take now, thank you.
However, I do think the obvious coarsening of the culture is absolutely related to tech media "advances." Parents cannot control their kids' environment *at all* compared to the past. Yes, information is good. Not being isolated in some backwater is good. Hearing and seeing everything possible, including really bad images and language, is not good, and the number one use for each new technology is porn. If people didn't want it so, it wouldn't be.
I do not consider "godlessness" an issue, as one poster pointed out, the most secular nations have a very good quality of living (and if I remember, used to lead the world in high-class porn...). If the hijackers didn't believe in an afterlife, maybe they wouldn't have crashed the planes.

Or just good human beings obeying their best instincts.
Like I said, I believe in a higher power. I believe God made us good, gave us the right stuff to be even better, and then just sat back and watched to see how we would do with His gifts.
When most people make themselves the victim rather than take responsibility most other facets of life and things gets messed up to meet with them new entitlements/expectations.
Creation of "wealth" from hard work is a mostly foreign concept these days.

The poorest people in the nation are the workers, the richest tend to be the cheaters.
Just the facts, ma'am.
Quote:
While the poor might seem to have the most reason to cheat and steal, the rich are more likely to be dishonest, a new study shows.
In a series of experiments, University of California at Berkeley researchers showed again and again that upper-class individuals were more prone to unethical behavior than people from more deprived backgrounds, according to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Paul Piff, a doctoral candidate and the study's lead author, says he was surprised at how little incentive it took to get high-income people to cheat.
Who are we bailing out regularly---not the poor who struggle with the pittance given them---but the richest folks who cry the most that the nation is in danger if they fail. So we bail them out and then pay them annual bonuses that most of the poor won't earn in a lifetime.
Don't kid yourself, it's always been a class war---right back to the medieval ages.
Communism is an economic system that works as man exploiting man. Capitalism is an economic system that works just the opposite.
With the country going downhill, no jobs, people losing their homes, the military health insurance will cost the soldiers more and Tricare for Life, which was given to those Vets who served 20+ years will now cost them, reductions to the Defense budget, when countries would like nothing better than to destroy us, I find it a bit unnerving that the CEO's today are making 300X the average workers salary and Obama is going to give Egypt $250M. It's the worst reality show out there. The world is laughing at us.
