Not too impressed with Des Moines because the downtown skyline is lot smaller than in Bellevue, Washington. Des Moines should work on attracting MORE people to downtown living, stores open on weekends and all. When I went there, it was DEAD on the weekends. It looked almost like a ghost town, I'm serious. They turned down the light rail line few years ago. Probably too car centric for now.

How long ago? Downtown DM on the weekends (specifically Friday and Sat nights) is pretty hopping. Tons of people out.

I find it a bit funny that you aren't impressed with DM because it has a smaller skyline than some random town in Washington. So what? And if you are judging by the photo above that shows the downtown from the pedestrian bridge, that angle does not allow you to see the entire skyline.

Bellevue is a major suburb of a metro area with 3.3 million people (Seattle). The Des Moines metro area has 560,000 people. Trying to compare one with the other is absurd.

It's on Grand Ave in Des Moines, west of Sherman Hill.

Plymouth Place brings back memories. I helped build it right out of high school. I played a very minor role in it's construction. Joined the carpenters union and ended up there. It was winter and I remember carrying a 4x8 sheet of plywood on about the 4th or 5th level when a gust of wind caught it and almost took me over the side. No safety nets in place back then...

My brother and I were sent to Saint Augustin's church a block south to hoist the new (?) cross in place that hangs above the altar. Beautiful church. I assume it was that one and not the Plymouth Congregational, but it was a long time ago so...

Your opinion is about eight years out of date. Des Moines is a little small yet for a light rail line, but I have no doubt that is in the not-too-distant future. All the things you say Des Moines should work on are thinks Des Moines is working on, actively and successfully.
And Des Moines actually has an absolutely massive skyline for a metro its size. Compare to Madison, Boise, Wichita, Colorado Springs, Syracuse, and Toledo. Bellevue is part of a metro area six times the size of Des Moines. Absolute nonsense comparison.

The skyline here is more impressive than Omaha, too, IMO.
