Thought I would try to highlight the Des Moines area by adding a photo topic to show the life and cityscape of the Des Moines metro area. I'll try to update this every day (don't get mad if it's every other day just in case I get busy). Anyone else should feel free to share any photos they may have as well to help keep this thread going.

Sherman Hill looks like a really cool urban neighborhood. I did some quick research on it and apparently they have a lot of homes being rehabbed and new residents are moving in.

Which city neighborhoods have strong i.e. healthy shopping districts dominated by small businesses and preferably those that are independently owned, not chain stores?

Sherman Hill is very cool. It's right near the downtown, too. It was once a pretty sketchy area but it's really come around. There's a cool grocery store right there that sells organic foods, and a neat coffee shop just up the hill. Oh, and my very favorite Vietnamese restuarant is there, too. http://www.historicshermanhill.com/

The photo of the Theatrical Shop is in Valley Junction, which is a West Des Moines shopping district full of unique local shops. They have farmer's markets on Thursdays in the warm mnths with live music, and other events like art festivals. www.valleyjunction.com/ Another great area that has really come around is the East Village, and eastern downtown district with local shops.
