That's an interesting write-up. I know that Rivian's production lines are currently down to do some retooling with supposedly a large slate of changes coming in, so I wonder if we'll see substantially different results when the refreshed R1T production lines spin back up this week.
I considered buying the Rivian but chose the Cybertruck over it for the following reasons:
- Bigger bed
- 4 wheel steering
- Stainless steel exterior and Tesla glass
- Tesla more established and have proven themselves to me (current owner)
Maybe it is just me, but the Cybertruck looks ugly as hell to me. It's the Pontiac Aztek, of the 2020s at least to me. I'll probably ruffle some feathers saying that, but that is just me. At least the Rivian R1T, doesn't look as ugly.

I think you'd have to be in a bubble to not realize the Cybertruck has some fairly polarizing reactions. I don't think that opinion really ruffles any feathers at all since that's been the case since the debut.
The Rivian R1T's appearance is also polarizing though not quite so much relative to the Cybertruck. To me, it just looks kinda friendly.
The upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV is also maybe a bit of a departure, but even less so.
Of the major EV trucks out in the US, the Ford Lightning is definitely the most traditional in terms of adhering very closely to its ICE counterpart.

I like the looks of the R1T, and I *really* like the looks of the R1S. The Cybertruck is definitely striking, but I have mixed feelings on its looks, and I wonder how good that bed is to actually use - the sides are awfully high towards the front.
I think they're both ugly. Why are most of these electric vehicles just not attractive? It makes no sense to me.
Range.
Why does a Prius look like a Prius, gas mileage. Aero first styling. The new Prius is middling looking but it got there because they stepped on the roof and gave it much less headroom and less cargo space.
Remember, EVs only store 2-3 gallons of gas worth of energy in their very expensive and heavy batteries (more like 4-5 on these pickups). Like with a Prius, it's all about efficiency. Hummer is a notable exception, ugly in a different way. That one gives zero cares about efficiency. It also gets 311 miles of range on the same battery a Silverado "Baleen Whale" EV can do 450 miles. 311 miles, 450 miles. The Chevy Baleen Whale is a bigger truck with more passenger space, more cargo space, more towing and cargo capacity. By looking like a Baleen Whale it gets 40% more range.
Why do all these new electric truck designs look like the F22? Is there some purpose?
