And I'm trying to find out if anyone else does what I do.....

When giving a gift for an occasion -- and the couple or person has registered at certain stores (which seem to always be at places more expensive than I personally shop, or are for specific items that cost more than I want to spend)...

....do you get a present from their list or place they've listed?

OR -- do you just get them what you want to get them?

I ask because friends have gotten married, bought houses, or had kids -- and registered for the wedding gifts or baby showers -- and I don't go by that. ONE time I think I checked out where someone was registered and what they listed. And the gifts were so expensive (IMO) -- that there no way in heck I was spending my money on that.

So I got them what I wanted to get for them. I AM a GOOD, gift giver. I give a lot of thought to my gifts and think outside the box. And my gifts have ALWAYS been commented on and they've been hits....AND for waaaaay less money than any of their registry gifts.

So "striking out on my own" so to speak is what I do....and it works.

A friend told me I should get something from the person's registry list. I was like -- "no way." It's just not me.
Maybe people are getting more practical -- and reasonable -- (which is subjective, of course) with their registry lists. But there was a period where I thought people were asking for the moon, when I looked at some of the things they wanted.
I usually do buy from their registry if they have taken the time to make one. But, I am not much of a shopper. I hate to select gifts as I never know what to buy.

It did not say the name of this wedding registry website, though.

I've always gotten them for weddings and showers.

I would hate that as a gift. I already have a kitchen cabinet made specifically for spices. It holds way more than 35.

Cash is the best gift.

If they're in their 20s, that might be a very nice gift. On the other hand, if they don't even have a blender, I'd buy something from their list and give some cash, too.

I usually give them what they ask, but limit up to $500 in USA and £500 for UK nephews and nieces. For my recent wedding, I gave cash or check. It’s all appreciated I’m sure, because nobody returned the gift.

Cash is certainly the safest gift if you don't buy from the registry.

Not everyone likes cash. I do not. Actually consider it a bit "who cares".

There are folks who do not have customized kitchen cabinets or spice racks or the very basics. I am actually working on one for a CD friend's birthday.
